New layer name will not change in drop down list

Hi,

I'm having problems with creating new layers and renaming them. After opening a new file and adding new layers in layer properties and renaming the files, the names won't appear in the drop down list. They layers appear in the drop down list as layer1, layer2, and so on, even after renaming them. I wan't to be able to switch layers in the drop down list without having to open layer properties every time to find the correct layer.

If anyone can help that would be great!

Thanks!

So ACA2012 is not new, and you appear to be running Win7, which is also not new.
So this is a sudden new problem, correct?

So what changed? add or drop a 3rd party tool? Change something on your PC?

Did you try a PC restart to see if the problem goes away?

Did you logging into your PC as someone else to see if the problem persists?

Yes it is Autocad 2012 and we use windows 7, also it was just recent.

We created a new template file to use and other problems started to happening, such as newly created layers are not appearing in paper space after the drawing was created.

I will try restarting, not sure if anyone updated something on my work computer.

Layers can be turned off in viewports separately from modelspace settings: did you know that?
Another problem of things not appearing in viewports could simply mean your viewport is not looking at the correct location in modelspace for content.
Another problem still could simply be the shademode setting of the viewport, or it's UCS orientation, which can also be separate from modelspace.

Have you investigated and ruled out all of these problems?

Do you just need to reset ARCH2012 like this https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to...

Or fix the "new" template file, or go back the the "old" template file?

Are you trying to change the layer names in your template or in the current drawing. Both drawings you illustrated appear to be in an unsaved and unnamed state.

To change the template, you must either open a DWT file or save the current drawing as a DWT file. Saving a drawing will not update your template.

This is also not an AutoCAD Architecture topic.  It is an AutoCAD topic.  There is a lot more traffic in the AutoCAD forum if this suggestion doesn't work and you need still need quick help.

I've never dealt with shademode, we started with a default Autocad file and just added a title block to paper space. So there should not have been any changes in the layers to begin with. I will probably just use the old file.

Although I found after restarting the computer, it fixed the problem with the layer names I had created, but not for any new layers added after that. So I may have to restart every time so that the layer names will be correct on the drop down list.

Thanks for all your advice. 🙂

After opening a new drawing (.dwg) I am having problems trying to add additional layers to use for my drawings. The layer names will not appear correct in the drop down list, but will be correct in Layer Properties Manager. I can't even rename old layers but I can change the properties of the layer.
