Names in AutoCAD Architecture are not included in 3DS MAX and FBX file format.

Hello everyone,

I'm currently working on a project in unity that needs to import fbx files at runtime. I've got some assets but only one that works kind of how it should be. The main problem I'm having right now is that the naming is different over the autodesk programs. Also the fbx file gets exported differently. When I export the fbx from architecture and import in unity the naming of the object are only numbers. When I import the dwg file in 3ds max and export the fbx then, the naming consist of that what you see in my provided screenshot.

But now we gave the object a name in architecture but there is no sign of that name in the fbx file nor in 3ds max.

Can't I just find it or is it impossible at the moment to get that name out? The project could fail if that is not possible to do.

Maybe there is something in development for that?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Greetings

Sebastian

3DSMax has a better FBX exporting tool perhaps?
"unity" has settings that can help or limitations perhaps?

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Autodesk Community, and thank you for posting your question here in the AutoCAD Architecture forum!

As far as I can tell, you cannot control the naming of objects when you export to FBX from AutoCAD Architecture (or from any AutoCAD-based program). These are all the setting options for -FBXEXPORT.

However, I wonder if you could do this from the 3dsMax side of things. @Alfred.DeFlaminis, do you know if there is a way to configure the naming of objects when you import the FBX file into 3dsMax?

Hello @Victoria.Studley and @Anonymous,

I've done a lot of Max to Unity work in my time, and the FBX always mimics the naming as set in Max.  For example if I put a sphere1 on a layer called Test when I import the FBX back into Max it'll be on a layer called Test with the same object naming within that layer.

The problem here seems to be how the naming is read on import for objects from ACA.  I'd imagine it's better to import the DWG into Max rather than the FBX.   What we need to do is see if the object names from ACA exist in Max when imported as a DWG.

I tried to test this by installing ACA and exporting an object but I have no idea what I'm doing in there.  If anyone could provide me a simple sample file with specific names to test by importing into Max that would be excellent and thank you.  I checked out the screenshots as attached by @Anonymous.  I see some objects called HSB1+EO, etc.  Is that the name of the object in ACA?

I think we can find a way to rename multiple objects at once in Max, for example by truncating the names on the front such as "Wall" or "Space".  What I need to know is if the object name appear anywhere inside the current names.  My lack of knowledge of ACA does mean I am somewhat dependent having a file provided to me (even a simple one) so I can skip the ACA side of things where I'm lost and focus on the Max side.

Is that doable?   I really just need a couple objects in there with obvious names to see if those names appear in 3ds Max.  The screenshot provided is nice but I cannot tell from it if the object names from ACA are part of the layer/object names in Max.

Best Regards,

Hi @Anonymous,

It looks like @Alfred.DeFlaminis may be able to help you here, but needs a sample file from you in order to assist. Could you please post a sample file? (You may want to eTransmit it to include all materials and reference files and then post the ZIP file.)

The only thing I could supply would be the dwg file so you could export it yourself and test it out. I'm always importing the dwg file into 3ds max.

Maybe you could find out where the names of the object are located in 3ds max.

The reason why we need that naming is so we can dynamically apply functions to the objects in the model.

Thanks for the help!

Hello @Anonymous,

I see what you mean here.  I cannot find any objects in this file once imported into Max named "WC Flex" as seen in your original image of the object name in ACA.  I don't think there is anything on the Max side which can resolve this except for manually naming the objects in 3ds Max.  I'd hoped to find a way to get those object names read by Max but none of the objects in the test scene have that name.  We can batch rename to remove things like "Layer-" and "Walls" but this would only be helpful if the object name existed somewhere within the name which it seemingly does not.  My best advice right now is to import them into Max and rename the objects in Max.  Then when you export to Unity the names will be correct.

Thanks for your hard work. Yeah I also thought of that to manually rename that thing. Sadly it's not what we really wanted but it seems like that there is no other way right now. Do we have any knowledge of autodesk doing something about that or that autodesk is working on some stuff that is working better with unity? I think the work between AutoCAD programs and unity will be a big thing in the future since there are many possibilities.

Hello @Anonymous,

Technology is amazing in how fast it evolves these days.  Something that wouldn't have been possible just 5 short years ago is now not only possible but highly desired.  Sometimes all it takes is a mention of what is desired and positive change can happen.  For things of this nature, I've found it's best to submit a Feature Request and then post those links in the thread where the issue came up.  This makes it much easier for folks to find that request if they are in this thread searching about an issue they are having.  If you do submit one, please post the link in this thread and I will vote on it because I think this is a good idea.  Thanks very much!   @Victoria.Studley, is there an Ideas/Feature Request board for AutoCAD?  Thanks!

Alright I made a post in the 3ds max idea section! Maybe some autodesk staff reads it and thinks about it.

Here is the link to the idea post! https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-ideas/autocad-programs-and-unity/idi-p/7528140

Thanks alot for your great help!

Hi @Anonymous, @Alfred.DeFlaminis,

Good idea adding this to the 3dsMax Idea Station. I'll head over and vote on it as well! Smiley Happy

AutoCAD products don't yet have an Idea Station, however the product managers for AutoCAD monitor all of the feedback and ideas they receive through our Product Feedback Form instead.
