Can you advise how to mask behind a number dimension so the number is seen clearly but the lines and other things behind are  not?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Pendean.

One more related question: How do we minimize the rectangular "mask" that is created behind the dimension?  (i.e., how do we adjust what is being masked, since some people might want that to be minimized).

Thanks again.

Other than ensuring there is no override width set (double-click the text, ensure the 'mtext' style width arrows look like this below), I'm not sure they can shrink them much more.
