If you have a drawing that has been set up for STB and want to convert it to CTB use the "CONVERTPSTYLES" command.

If this is your own drawing and you want to use CTB plot styles make sure you start any new drawing with a template that has been set up for CTB plot styles.

CONVERTPSTYLES to convert STB (named plot style) to CTB (color dependent)

CONVERTCTB to convert from CTB to STB

Accepted solution

CONVERTPSTYLES to convert a drawing using STB to CTB or a drawing using CTB to STB.

Before converting a drawing from CTB to STB, use CONVERTCTB to convert your CTB file to a "mapping" STB file, which you then use when running CONVERTPSTYLES on a CTB drawing file.  Chances are you will then need to run a layer script or manually clean up the plot styles that get assigned using the mapping STB, so that it works with a desired STB file.

My issue is I do not have the stb file (missing when I go to the plot dialog window). What will I get if I run the convert to ctb? Will I get anything at all if the stb file is missing?

What .stb plot style is missing?

You can convert to a .ctb if that is what you want to do. It simply will convert the lineweights from the stb to color based line weights.

My recommendation would be to learn all about stb plot styles and create your own .stb plot style.

There are two reasons why it would show an STB file as missing:

  • The file remains a named plot style file (STB), but the assigned plot style file is not present in any of the plot style file location(s) specified in your current AutoCAD profile.
  • The file started out as a named plot style file (STB), had a named plot style file assigned, and was then converted to a color-dependent plot style file (CTB).  In this scenario, you could have the original named plot style in the plot style file location, but because the file is now using color-dependent plot styles, that file is not available for use.

For the first case, you would either need to acquire the missing plot style file (for example, a custom file used by an outside firm, or created by someone else, in-house, but not shared with everyone) and place it in the folder (or one of the folders, if there are more than one) specified in the profile as plot style file locations.  If that file cannot be acquired, you may have to substitute one of the out-of-the-box files or a modified copy of one of them if none of the out-of-the-box files have the needed plot styles (or the settings do not produce the expected results).  An alternative to modifying a file specifically for this file would be to select an available STB file and modify the file to use the plot styles that are defined in that file.  The latter may be the preferred method if your firm has a standard STB file that is typically used.

In the second case, if you do not have a CTB file that can be used in lieu of the missing STB file (with or without modifications to a copy of the CTB file or to the drawing), and you do have the originally specified STB file, you could convert the file back to using named plot files (STB).  That will require a mapping STB file, created from a CTB file using the CONVERTCTB command.  I believe if the correct named plot styles were assigned to the original file, that when converting back, those may be restored.  If not, you will have some post-processing to do, to replace the named plot styles assigned from the mapping STB file with the appropriate named plot style from the desired STB file (presumably, the "missing" one).

I have followed this whole thread and done hours of research online, but with Autocad LT 2015 convertctb is not a command. What else can I do to change the file from a CTB to an STB file.

Thanks in advance for any guidance,

Alissa

Start a new drawing with a stb template and copy and paste old ctb file into new file
