Files with 3D elements take FOREVER to open from Synology DS713+.

Any file we have with 3D walls take a very long time to open, sometimes as much as 10 minutes.  If we have any files

that are just flat lines it opens almost instantly.  Even switching between two open files can cause a delay sometimes as much 4 or 5 minutes.  The mouse is still active and we can use other programs, internet, etc but CAD seems to freeze up while it is process or something.

We have a small office approx 4 computers using CAD and an additional 4 computers also connected to the NAS.  We have a brand new gigabit switch and all ethernet cables are Cat5e and we are getting gigabit speeds.  The average file size is less than 4MB's.

I have tired reading the forums as well a googles the issue and no of the suggestion seem to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might increase our file opening speed?  We mostly noticed it about 6 months ago while using ACA 2018 but noticed it even more now with ACA 2019.

Hi @asikora_frazedesign,

Based on what you've described, it sounds like you're storing and working on your files in an unsupported configuration (see the following articles).

The unsupported storage environment is likely the cause of the problem. Do you have a supported Microsoft network environment that you can test the same files in to see if the issue subsides?

It turns out that we I longer think it is the NAS drive.  Yesterday (May 7th) everything was running so slow for everyone in the office in regards to Autocad.  I and 2 other coworkers copied some files from the server and tried to open the locally.  With both Autocad Architecture 2018 and 2019 the load times would sometimes take sometimes as much as 10 minutes to load.  Then opening the previously mentioned files either locally or from the NAS was taking about the same amount of time which was in the 5+ minute range.  The files were less than 2mb in size, we purged, audited, purged again just to make sure, closed and saved.  Reopened both locally and from NAS and still the files were taking 5+ minutes to load.  Even a brand new empty file with no drawings were taking an extensive amount of time to open.  So at this time I do not feel the NAS itself is anyway at fault regarding the issue of long loading times.  I will continue to monitor the situation and post any update information I may have.

Hi @asikora_frazedesign,

Thank you for the update. If you're storing the files locally, with no connections back to the network, and the load times are still long (measuring in minutes for a newly created DWG from an out-of-the-box template is certainly far too long), then I have a few more questions to help narrow down the root cause.

  • Which version of the Windows operating system are you running (enter WINVER into the Start search bar)?
  • Did you install any Microsoft updates around the time the issue began? (If so, which ones?)
  • Is the program already open, and each time you open a DWG it takes a long time? Or is this on first launch?
  • Are there any loading messages at the bottom of the screen as the file is opening?

  1. I how is basically the IT guy here is using a brand new Dell workstation with Windows 10 pro.  A few others are using Windows 10 Home I believe and 1 computer is using windows 7.
  2. No it seems like we all seem to have slow loading issues at the same time hence the reason we assumed it was the NAS.
  3. We have tried with both the program loaded then open a file as well as double clicking a file and have it load the program.  To add to this if we have 2 or more files open there is often a delay sometime as long as 2 minutes when switching between more than already open file. (yes they are both open in the same instance of autocad).  On top of that if we have a drawing file with multiple layouts there is sometimes the same approx 2 minute delay when switching between layouts or going to model space.
  4. There is not unusual messages.  We see "checking license" at least 3 times, as well as load this or that.  I have recently turned on /nologo for my short cut and that does speed up loading times but only for the initial program.

Today seems to be running much smoother which makes me wonder if there is even a remote possibility it has to do with the Checking License part of the program boot.  I assume it is pinging Autodesk to get a response for our license #.  If this is accurate I feel it is possible at times that there may be issues on the Autodesk end having trouble verifying licenses and it take a few tries before Autocad gets a response back from Autodesk or gives up and finishes loading the program.

I will also add we have been having this issue for a few months sporadically (but has been getting worse and worse) and I thought it might be our old 10/100 switch.  I upgrade and rewired the backroom with a new gigabit switch and used brand new Cat5e cables between the switch, panel board, and all equipment (modem, NAS, etc).  Between the panel board and PC data terminals we already had Cat5e wire installed when the building was remodeled year ago.  I was hoping that would fix it and it seemed like it did for that first day but the next day we were right back to slow file openings.

Hi @asikora_frazedesign,

Thanks for the update.

If everyone in your office is experiencing the delays simultaneously, when opening different files, stored in different locations (locally and in a network location), and the issue intermittently comes and goes, I wonder if it's either a latency issue (network or ISP) or an anitivirus/security conflict (this tends to manifest at predictable intervals).

Typically, licensing issues occur on startup, but since the program often hangs up for a bit at "Checking license...", you may want to look into these solutions, if you think it's a licensing check that's causing the delays:

And if you find that the switch occurs more with certain files than others, especially when opening drawings and switching layouts, test the solution in this article:

I hope these help point you in the right direction.

I have not had the time yet to check out the links you posted and try them.  Because of the slow performance we are little behind on a few deadlines and as soon as we get a couple project out the door I will dig into them.  Hopefully by mid next week.

I put this on the back burner for a few weeks and just started dealing with it again.  This appears to be a Window 10 issue as the files open just fine in Windows 7 but severely delayed when opening on a Windoes 10 pc.  Both from the NAS and locally it takes almost the exact same amount of time to open so I am confident both the NAS and the Network are not the issue.
