Alias crashes constantly while trying to open one particular saved file

Hello,

Alias is crashing constantly whenever I try to open one particular saved file. The other files open successfully without any problems.

This is the crash report I get -

Error: Access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)
Crashed Module Name: libGeometryDefn.dll

I am using the 2023 version.

May I know how to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, sorry to hear you are having issues.

When you go to file open can you pick the option box you will see a lot of options to Keep Windows, cameras, etc. turn all of these off and see if the data loads.

Once loaded you might need to create a new perspective camera to vie the data.

If that works then you can try opening it again with some of the more important elements like Layers. See if it opens and try to recover as much of your file.

Hope that helps.

If what Robin suggested does not work, you can try to loading the file into an older version of Alias, if you have access to one.  If that works there still may be some data loss.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I do not have access to another version. If you have another version, maybe I can email the file to you?

Send me a private message (hover over my name) and attach it, or if it's too big, upload it to one drive (or something) and send me the link.

Sorry that did not work.

An alternative to different version is to open it in maya, it sounds like something is getting in a loop that can not be broken. If you don't have maya share the file with me and I will see if I can open it and send it back.

Cheers

Unfortunately The best we could is recover his file in 2017 ( a version before subdivs) so his subdivs were converted to nurbs. It can be read by 2020 (the first release of subdivs), but any file written out cannot be read by a later release.
