Process to split large assemblies over multiple drawings

Process to split large assemblies over multiple drawings

Hi all,

I think AS needs a proper solution when it comes to splitting large assemblies over multiple drawings. As it stands, there are workarounds, but none of them work very well...

To me, only a handful of tools would solve this problem:

- Should be able to move views and sections from the main detail to subsequent drawings.

- The views and sections should remain linked to the master drawing (so that callouts/names/references can be automated).

- Should have the ability to create a "blank" drawing so that we can have somewhere to copy this information onto.

- As it stands, Autodesk support have suggested using a "pickbox" detail style to generate partial views on subsequent sheets. This is not ideal given that the pickbox option does not allow for isolating the assembly and all attached / surrounding parts come onto the detail. Might seem insignificant, but this is a big issue... An option to isolate pickbox selection to an isolated assembly? Although I think if we could have the first three items, this workaround would not be needed.

Hope this is on the development radar...

Thanks,

Dart

I don't know what you use for numbering format. My shop isn't too picky so I usually create one master main part drawing with all of the parts detailed on it. I don't use it for production and I don't even clean it up, it is just so Advanced Steel can number the parts. Then I create other sheets with views and detail views on them and all of the parts update automatically. You can drag views from one drawing to another in the Document Manager as long as they are not attached to a drawing style. Hope that helps for now!

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, there are workarounds as I said, but these involve a lot of manual input. Assuming the way you are creating the views is either using cameras/pickbox styles, you would also be facing the same problems. Which is that you can't isolate the assembly and all attached assemblies will show up as well. Beyond the obvious (time taken to delete unwanted parts), this is a dangerous practice as it relies on the user to make decisions about the assembly which the software should make. Not talking about simple assemblies here, but frames with lots of attached parts...

to be able to split large assemblies over multiple drawings is a must for us. If we cannot do this easily then its not going to work. We do a lot of chute work and its often on 5-6 pages. We use Prosteel which is a lot more user friendly. I hope they work something out soon.

Agreed. IT'S A MUST.

limited to simple projects, unusable on complex assemblies.

This has been requested before.

Nice to find my exact topic here, but not so nice to not find a decent solution. Are you listening Autodesk?

I have a pipe trestle that needs multiple views and sections. At the moment I have it at 3/8"=1'-0" scale, way too small to show detail, yet still too large to get all my sections on one sheet. This is a nightmare!

any news on this?

Question # 1 - how are the large assemblies built? From sub-assemblies, Xrefs ... ?

Question # 2 - what difference would it be for Advance Steel if the drawing contained only one sheet (current status in SW) or several sheets (one drawing = several sheets)? Pros and cons?

Further questions will come after answering these 2 above :zwinkerndes_Gesicht:.

@Julio_SotoI think we need to be patient. It's only been 4 years...:Gesicht_mit_Freudentränen:

@AnonymousThe "large assembly" is built as a single assembly ie Truss/Bridge Girder... Sub-Assemblies have their place, but I think it's a different application.

I can only speak of the Cons, since as far as I can see, this is a MUST. But there are simply instances where you just cannot provide all the required views/sections/information for these in one sheet. Now (in case i missunderstood your post), if you are referring to a single drawing file with several "layouts" as opposed to several drawing files for the one assembly, then I think that is definitely a discussion worth having! To kick it off, I would suggest single file/multiple layouts would be "perfect world".

"any news on this"......hahahaha!!! lololol!!!

I have been assisting the development team and I can tell you they are working in a world of their own. I have offered several decent suggestions here and none of them are being worked on, implemented, thought of, zilch! I honestly don't know what this 'Advance Ideas' page is truly for, to make us feel good I guess....

I will say MY attitude towards AS drawings has changed radically. Rather than fight the software for the detail-related things it does not do, I work with what it will do. For instance, if we have a large assembly, I now know it has to be on one sheet. So maybe it's going to be 1/2"=1'-0" scale....I don't care, assemblies are road maps for welding things together. It's the single part sheets that make the pieces, and they can be at 1"=1'-0".

To quote a well used phrase, "it is what it is".

Not sure if the ideas station makes us feel good or frustrates us...:denkendes_Gesicht: Biggest copouts are "Future Consideration" "On the radar" "On our roadmap".... When???

In the meantime, it would be worth noting that there is a workaround to split assemblies, although not great, which is to create duplicate drawings of the same assembly.

I agree with @iwafb it would make sense to have have 1 file with multiple sheets for large assemblies.

This happens quite often that you need more than one sheet to show all the details required "clearly" and easy to follow.

Also the ability to right click on a section / detail etc and select "move to sheet" within the assembly file while retaining its live links to the cut or detail symbols.

Hi all,

no reaction from Devs in this forum, no reaction in Idea Station to the proposals submitted. Again, we were left alone in space ...
