Clone manual modifications from one drawing to the next
Hi All,
I would like to see a function in AS where you can migrate any manual editing (dimensioning, labels...) from one drawing to the next for similar assemblies. Similar to Clone function in Tekla...
In a previous post, I requested cloning for complex details that are similar.
As a compromise, even the ability to copy and paste elements (dimensions, labels...) from one drawing to the next would be huge.
As users, we are constantly having to deal with large assemblies which take a long time to edit. Any slight difference, makes this assemblies appear in a different drawing (as it should). Which means we need to make the same changes/mods to drawings which are essentially identical but have small differences (extra hole, or extra cleat, or gusset in different position...).
The way I see it, this feature would have the potential to not just save hours, but days if not weeks over certain projects.
I'm confused about the status of this request. It's showing up as Future consideration and Gathering support. I just hope it's the latter...
At this risk of being accused of blowing my own trumpet. I think this would be the single biggest time saver Autodesk can provide. Especially if they want Advance to be competitive against products like Tekla.
It's been explained to me that the Clone argument can be negated by simply having detail styles that work in the first instance. Whilst I can see this argument, it's impossible to have perfect detail styles for every instance. That's without even considering the financial aspect.
Please understand that not all jobs are text book, and it's exactly when those odd jobs come about that functions like these make all the difference.
I'll use a recent job as an example (which we detailed in a different package due to its ability to copy details/dimensions from one drawing to the next).
The job involved creating a lot of atrium frames. All of similar design. Because these frames were spanning between existing buildings, the geometry was always slightly different. Furthermore, there were slight differences between adjacent frames of same geometry.
Time spent editing first drawing in a set (about 5-8 hours)
Time spent editing subsequent drawings by copying information from first drawing (between 1 and 2 hours)
Without this ability, every drawing would have been in the 5-8 hour range...
Personally, if I could choose between having detail styles that could potentially "do anything" or cloning, I'd choose cloning every time...
We have had the drawing style manager since the beginning of the software and it has not changed all that much in the 16 years I have been using it.
It has had a few enhancements here and there but is still a very long way from being perfect and aside from lacking functionality to get the required output in more complex cases, there are still many "bugs" in it where things just do not work as they should.
...so it is clear after 16 years that this is not currently the answer to the problem and will not be for many years to come.
I consider myself pretty good at drawing style configuration and often provide this service to clients who may have a lot of repetitive type of work, but even then we can generally only get about 90-95% automation and some amount of editing will always still be required.
For most users, every job can be wildly different and for contract detailers like myself, different clients have different requirements for how drawings are presented.
...its just not worth spending the time configuring a drawing style for one project.
Both myself and @iwafb have stated that the suggested cloning functionality would be the single biggest time saver that could be developed and I still stand by that 100% and cannot see why there is not more support for this idea.
It would be a dream come true if we could generate a detail drawing from a default setting. Then change overall appearance, dim requests, labels, etc. Then save as a custom drawing style. Kinda like when you copy a drawing style and rename it. We no expert, so we need AS to be kind to dummies!
The Drawing Style Manager is like a 720,000 page Greek dictionary released in US with no translation, no alphabetical organization, no reference, no table of contents or index.....why?
You are right @Drawtech, I would've though there would be a lot more support. Although, when taken in context (compared to all other ideas), it is up there for votes but still no implementation!
Can only hope it gets some serious consideration. And that, sooner rather than later.
Advance is a relatively new product in Australia (has been here for a long time, but is only just starting to take). I get a lot of queries from companies/users reviewing the product and looking for a detailers' (real life users) take on the product. Cloning is something that comes up on nearly every conversation, especially those looking to migrate from Tekla (and I'm not the one bringing it up!).
Just posting to try and keep this thread alive . Fully understand this kind of function would require a lot of development, but I think the consensus is that it would be well worth it...
My local vendor who is provides me a support suggested to me to log on to this site and to create pressure on program developers with help of other users to support and finally implement this cloning function of drawings into AS. It is very sad that a person pays a service, writes suggestions for improvements, but then I am asked to push my proposal through web forums? What do all maintenance programs pay for?
I worked with Teklas Structures from 07-12. This clonic function has already been in Tekla at that time. Since 2013, when I started working with the AS, I have been alerting my local vendor about this NONEXISTANCE and the only thing that has happened is that nothing is happening on this issue! It is obvious that clients are probably the last. Important is only to have a new version every year, but nothing new really come!
Dear Program Developers. When do you finally set up this cloning feature? It is sad that it has been talked about for so many years and the result is overlooked. How many more voices do you need from us to get something done? It is not enough to have official incentives from local vendors who are closest partners for us – final users?
This would surely save more time than anything else that could be developed!
...not to mention saving the soul sapping monotony of editing pretty much the same detail over and over again due to minor differences between assemblies such as an extra hole or plate etc.
