when I have an existing structure and I un tick it in the single part category to prevent it being used for numbering and bill of materials, after numbering I have to then re select the item/s then un tick them from the assembly, surely it would be beneficial  for the software not to include the items in assembly if you don't want them as a single part on large models having to un tick items again is very time consuming.

Why dont you use a group to keep these parts seperate from the others and this way be able to exclude them from numbering alltogether?

or some other structuring option? Seperate layer?

You could use a query - just check "used for numbering" in the single part area and save it for later reuse in the project explorer. This would take just one minute and later a few seconds. Could that work for you?
