For any single line view using symbols the axis, median, single, etc. line should not go trough the symbol, it should stop on either side like so:

Also, allow users to set the gap of each member independently.

I don't think your idea is logical. If we talk about steel structures in general, it is more than necessary to represent such lines completely (system lines in my opinion). Eg. from a static point of view, you need to know where such lines meet - which can also be in the area of the profile symbol, you mentioned above.

Not showing these lines has no benefits - in appearance, performance and function.

Thea reason for not showing the line through the symbol is for clarity purposes. If the column was rotated 90°, you would not be able to clearly see the hidden lines. The same thing would happen for angles, channels, etc.

Not showing the line through the widget is a common practice in the oil & gas/ Petro Chem industry.
