Changing from ISO to AWS

Hi all,

I am new to Advance Steel and the company I work for insists that we use it. I am detailing a structure that another engineer modeled an having some trouble with the welding symbols. Our company standard is ISO but Advance Steel seems to be set to AWS by default. I am unable to find the setting to change this. Can someone please show me where I can find this option? I don't see why it can't just be a setting in the weld symbol popup itself like in Inventor or AutoCAD Mechanical.

The attached image shows in red what I need to add to the weld symbol, if that helps

my experience with Advance Steel say: compliant with the standard (ISO, DIN) Advance Steel automatically creates the required welding symbols. In the case of asymmetrical welds, the dashed part of reference line appears automatically (se below), because it is not necessary for symmetrical ones. The a- or z- valu can be defined as the prefix in each weld connection.

An example:

The problem is - the a- or z-letter can be defined as prefix for one one side only, which is unacceptable. Therefor I use no letter for corner weld, it will be always a (I haven't seen someone prescribe the z-value in a long time)

Thanks for the info, I can accept the prefix but I'm still not sure how you get the dashed line, it's not popping up automatically in my layout. Is there a setting for this?

The dashed line appears automatically, you cant set it. Creating a weld is not the same as AutoCAD Mechanical, where it defines everything from the ground to the sky 🤣. 

There is already a request from me in the Advance Steel Idea Station, but it's a futile effort.  Advance Steel creates a dashed line whenever it really has to, then I haven't seen a single case where it didn't work. It's one thing if the weld symbols are generated automatically from the model or you create them manually in the drawing ... it works very good. Make small assembly (eg. 2 plates ...) and create a weld. After you generate the drawing for the main part, you will see more 😁.

Thanks for your assistance. I think the modeler didn't add the welds in the model, so the dashed line is not being generated automatically.

Hi @Jaco_ErasmusUKGEN,

you can edit the weld symbol even in the drawing, but the prefix can be set only for the weld above (here at German).
