Viewport Canvas error01

I’m having a problem with Viewport Canvas again. I’m not sure if this is a problem that is common, but I have an assembly that I’ve created some Render to Texture, Textures. I want to use Viewport Canvas to refine the texture with chips and stains but I’m getting this error message. I’ve been able to create one successfully but all the other parts are giving me this message. Any ideas from the community?

Hello @papaf1,

I'd like to help you with this issue you are having regarding the viewport canvas.  When you say an assembly, do you mean a lighting assembly or do you mean it in a more generic sense?  Would it be possible for me to check out the file?  It's hard to diagnose this without something tangible.  If privacy is paramount, you can PM me a link and I will check it from there.  Any files sent to me are deleted after diagnosis.

If that is not an option, can you describe what this assembly is in a bit more detail?  Is it a single object?

Hello @papaf1,

I don't see anything in my PM folder.  The only other of your threads I'm aware of that I've participated in was your phantom bump map.  I think Ben was helping you with a previous viewport canvas issue, according to my records.  Thanks for sending that again.  There is a lot of forums getting combined right now, I'm not sure if those processes are somehow interfering with the PM system.  Please try again.

Thank you and best regards,

Apparently I can't reply to the email I get with this post. I'll send you the file from the Autodesk site.

Hello @papaf1,

Papaf1, I'm sorry for the confusion here.  I see now what has happened, you actually have a support package so your messages were going straight to tier 2 support.  I am basically 1.9, so I wasn't seeing them.  I've sorted this out, and I have your file now.  Thank you for your patience.  I'm going to take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Ok, to the file.  EDIT:  Works fine in 2017, but 2014 did have issues.  I did quite a bit of testing here.  The easiest fix is to put your Channel 3 uvs on Channel 1.  It works fine and fast in that case.  Otherwise, I had to paste channel 3 uvs to channels 1 and 2 in order to properly paint on Channel 3.  I think this is because of the overlapping uvs on channels 1 and 2.  For some reason, the VC won't look past that.  I tested this theory by doing a flatten mapping / pack uvs to ensure no overlapping on channels 1 and 2, and it also worked then as well.  So the key here seems to be overlapping uvs on channels that exist earlier than the painted target channel will cause it give that error message.  Please let me know if you find this doesn't work for you.

I wouldn't have been able to resolve this without the file, so thank you for sending it.

Best Regards,

Hello @papaf1,

Thank you for the update on this!  It does look like this solved the problem or works as a workaround, and I am posting this message for other readers that were following this issue.  I had a PM from papaf1 and I just wanted to report that here.  Best of luck on your project, and thanks so much for your patience with the attachment/email issue.
