Problem with Multi/Sub-object and Turbo smooth

Hi!

I'm quite new to texturing and have run into some problem with my Multi/Sub-object material when applying Turbo smooth to my model. Maybe I'm using the wrong method here to achieve what the reference image shows. Any suggestions? 🙂

See the attached image for a better understanding.

Thanks in advance!

Two different things here,

First, the 'black' area that you see in the reference image is not material based, that looks black because there is no light in that area.

That watch is a single material that is very reflective, so it is reflecting the environment, for that type of images will consist of light planes or reflectors that will create bright and dark areas. so what you see is a reflection and not that the material is black.

Second, when you apply turbosmooth you will create new polygons or faces, so unless you have a well-defined edges turbo smooth will get screwed with the Materials ID, because of those new polygons created to smooth your geometry.

You should put extra edges in that area to better define the curving area or apply Materials ID after you apply turbo smooth.

But again if you are trying to replicate the reference image, you are doing it wrong, it is all about lights and reflections.

Do a research about studio photography or product photography to see how all those 'effects' are created.

Bet luck.

Thanks for the reply! I understand reflections/different lights can create an illusion. In this case however there are two separate materials I'm aiming at. This reference image shows the blank and brushed metal surface better:

That Turbo Smooth > Edit Poly thing's maybe the way to go. A bit laggy when selecting though but better control.
