when I click-drag with the mouse to select code in the editor, the highlight color does not show. Is there a setting somewhere to change this? It is actually selecting, because ctrl-c and ctrl-v still work as expected. The color just doesn't show up.

According to that help file and the properties file:

selection.alpha=30
selection.back=#000000

Should be showing grey highlighting. It shows nothing at all.

EDIT: I upped the alpha to 80 and it is working now. I guess 30 is just too low.

The values shown in the help are the defaults. They work fine here.

selection.back is the colour of the highlight.
selection.alpha is the transparency of that highlight.
Obviously, the less transparent it is, the more of the colour you will see.
The default of 30 and #000000 is pale black - black, but very transparent, so it looks grey.
