Unwrapping specific faces of multiple models, simultaneously

Hi,

I have had this question quite often when unwrapping vehicle UV's. The vehicle models comes with hierarchies where the moving parts are separate components or meshes.

To unwrap them I prefer not having to detach their metallic paint, because by doing so, I lose normals information and it also makes the general workflow very tedious and troubling.

If I were to unwrap the front faces, the bright wood, for all 4 models at once, without seeing the rest of the model UV's, how would I best go about doing this?

It's a bit hard to envision what you want to do from the data on hand but from what I see I would try this:

  • Select all the objects you want to modify
  • Add an "Edit Poly" modifier on the entire selection
  • Use the Edit Poly to select the polygons you want to unwrap
  • Add an "Unwrap UVW" and unwrap
  • When done right-click on the "Unwrap UVW" and choose "Collapse to"

That should preserve the unwrapping and keeps the objects separate as they were before

Let me know if that helps or if I got it wrong.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll be using this going forwards. I had also heard of the modifier "Poly Select" but the one that you came up with did the trick.

Post marked solved! 😊
