Hello, I recently came across this problem. When I select multiple objects, for instance 2, and then I apply a Unwrap UVW modifier and then click "Open UV Editor", I can't seperate the UVS. According to a youtube tutorial from 3dtotal, the person says by selecting a certain face on any of the objects and then growing it, it should select all faces of the certain object, but leave the other object unselected. I'm using 3ds Max 2018 and apparently this method doesn't work.

I think it is a bug. If you deselect, change the tool from scale to move, for example, select again and expand selection it can work again. But in a random unresponsive way. Sometimes wont allow to change tool at all when selection is active, you need to deselect.
By the way if you want to select the full island of the selected object in the 3d display (no the edit UVs window) use the 3 cubes icon. This eliminates the need of expand selection to select the island. Similar menu in the Edit UVs with the cube.

Hi,
Beside the way described by @Anonymous, in the Edit UVWs dialog, while both boxes are selected,
You can select one polygon, then click the button "Group Selected" in the Elements Properties rollout.
