Retopology gives weird, distorted results

Hello, I am new to Max (2023), converted from Maya after seeing the magic of new retopo tools from Arrimus. However, I am struggling to reproduce what he shows even in Retopolgy Masters 1. Even simple operations, like remeshing a cylinder, gives uneven, unacceptable results I don't see in his examples. And Quad Remesher is also giving me the same trouble, albeit in a less evident way. I've tried all kinds of combinations - subdivide, mesh cleaner, different retopology settings, double retopology... double retopology breaks the mesh severely.

Hope someone had encountered this. One redditor showed me that he had similar issues, but he solved them with some value tweaks in the Retopo modifier, but my issues are way more pronounced.
