Problems converting models to 3ds format

Hi guys I am new here and a noob when it comes to modeling.

I am trying to convert a free model I have found on the web so I can use it in a home design program called Sweet Home 3D (its used for creating 3D representations of houses and make floor plans). That program can import furniture and textures in specific formats, one of these formats is .3ds

So I open that model in my 3D studio and then I export it to .3ds. So far so good, but when I try to import the model into Sweet Home 3D the program only recognize the lines and vertices, not the textures of the model. Then I tried converting the model into.dae format (another compatible format) but the program dont load the model. The same happens with .obj format.

After a entire day I found out that Sweet Home 3D dont work with .dds texture formats and only work with .bmp, .jpeg, .gif and .png images.

Now I am trying to convert the .dds textures into .png or .jpeg formats but again I am not being able to successfully import the model.

Any hints on how to do so guys?

it's not a problem with 3ds max it's a problem with Sweet Home 3D http://www.sweethome3d.com/support/forum/viewthread_thread,1357%3Bjsessionid=9A4E3C5F9EC82586F84B6F7.....

so you need to go onto their community and ask if there is another way to import with a plugin or script 3ds max into Sweet Home 3D

Thanks I have took a look into the link you posted and after some musing on my part I decided to try and convert the .dds file into .png using some file converters.

As I write this post I have succed into managing to load the models on Sweet Home 3D by making a "trick" move.

I converted the .dds to .png. Then I replaced the .dds file with the .png and renamed the extension. That worked with a .obj.

Thanks for the help Smiley Happy
