My symmetry modifier seems to be 'smushing' polygons

So, for starters, I'll explain the situation. I've modelled a corner of a castle keep. The plan was to apply two different symmetry modifiers to the editable poly (the keep corner I've modelled is 1 editable poly) to create the other three quadrants identically. I had no issues applying my first symmetry modifier: http://prntscr.com/t6p29f

However, the second one seems to smush my polygons in a really unhelpful way: http://prntscr.com/t6p2m5

As this is the way I've been instructed to do this by my professor, I am rather lost. For further clarification, we are applying the symmetry modifier to an edge on each side of the keep. I have tried all three different mirror axes. I have also tried messing with the "Flip", "Slice Along Mirror", and "Weld Seam" settings of the modifier to no avail. I am using 3DS Max 2020.

Is it possible that your Mirror gizmo is just not aligned with the desired "central" edge of your object?
