How to apply a texture to a custom polygon.

I'm very new to 3ds so please forgive the question.

I want to build a base for a cabin that has rocks protruding to create a pattern so in the end I have what looks like rocks cobbled together with concrete (like you might see in a forest cabin.) To do that I made a base and made a few polygons that kind of resembled rocks. I put some bitmap images on materials and I have two problems.

1) Either I get a horribly stretched and deformed image that is unrecognizable on one or more polygon sides

2) I get a scrollable map that looks fine but is obviously not correct

I'm using all of this for a project in Unity.

I feel like I'm going about this all wrong, could someone suggest a better technique to texture rocks? I feel like I'm missing out on something big here.
