I wonder how was/could this sofa be modeled in 3dmax.
Are there any script/plugin that could be used, perhaps using a displacement modifier?
to create the surface shape.

Haven't done this type of thing in a while so wont be able to tell you the best approach but if I had to do this I would experiment first with fur and then with displacement.
With fur I would us a map to control the length and patterns.
With displacement you can do the same but use a render engine based displacement option, not geometry based.
Either way, the model itself would be very simple.
