How can you select parts of a single object for further modification?

I'm new to 3DS Max and have what is hopefully a simple showstopper problem to get by.

Let's say I draw a box, then add many height dividers. I then apply a bend modification to the box until it resembles an arch.

Let's now say I want to take a part of this object - maybe the left half - and apply further mods to only that part. How do I "divide" an object into sub-objects?

To divide the object to two or more objects: apply Edit Poly, select the geom you want to separate, then hit Detach.

If you want to keep a single object, and only affect certain parts with mods: apply a Mesh Select mod, select the verts (or other sub-object) you want to affect, then apply your next mod on top of that.
