extrude edges outwards

Hi all, I need help! Is there a simple way to extend the edge lines by using the extrude or stretch command that gives even sides?

a workaround you might try is to extrude them straight up and then use the extrude tool on the resulting faces. you can use the option to extrude by local normal and then delete the faces you don't need... might not be the most efficient solution but I think it would get what you need.
