You cannot access the same setting and tools in max as you can in maya, there is always away around doing the modeling in max as you do in maya
But you need to know max and the interface, unless you are experienced in max then i would not try this, because it's like you are trying to run before you can walk
i would find a simple video tutorial in maya and then try what you know about the max's interface and then modeling the max, but you mite become overwelmed by the two different tool and software.
or you could download the students version, or trial verison of maya then import the maya model into max
