Can only see object outline

Anonymous
Not applicable

Ever since I've installed 3ds Max 2015 on my laptop, every time I try to create an object, I can't see its color, only the object outline:

But when I render the object I can see its color:

2.png

Here are the object properties:

Does anyone know how this can be fixed? All help is appreciated.

I'm guessing your viewport setting is set on wireframe.  my attached pic shows the viewport options for max 2015.  Change your setting to shaded and see if you get what you want.

By latest version do you mean 3ds Max 2017? I've had my 3ds Max 2015 installed only for a few weeks, I'd say about 2.

Sorry Leticia, too much spam on this thread to sort out who you were responding to.  What is your viewport options set at?

Ignore the nonsense about versions, I guarantee you that max has not put out a version incapable of displaying shading in the viewport!

Hello Bob,

My viewport options are set at Perspective and Realistic by default. I've tried changing Realistic to Shaded but that hasn't fixed my issue.

Wow, this is pretty weird. I just booted 2015 and searched pretty hard
for a wireframe override, or something like that but nothing. The only
things I know that could do this would be the "show as box" setting in
object properties, but you showed your options in your op, and that's
not checked.

Wish I could help, perhaps I can direct Alfred to this thread. Hes with
AD and is really helpful.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

Bob messaged me to alert me to your problem and I'd like to help. I've looked over the thread and there are some great suggestions here.  The suggestion to turn on and off wireframe as suggested by Bob's first post is great advice.  The hotkey to switch between wireframe and solid is F3.

I have two hunches I wanted to explore.  First, I wonder if adaptive degradation is causing the viewport to always draw wireframes.  On the bottom of your screenshots you can see a wireframe box with a blue background, roughly in the center of the bottom of your interface.  Would you please disable that for me?  Adaptive degradation is a feature that sets things to display as box if the card is working too hard or the scene gets too heavy.  (So Bob had basically both the right ideas here, very good.)  I have a screenshot here showing the icon.

adaptive degradation.png

Now, naturally a box isn't very heavy, so my second instinct is that perhaps your current graphics card isn't supported in Max 2015.  Can you please let me know what your current graphics card is?  You may have better luck with a different display driver in 3ds Max, do you see any different results when you try a different display driver?  Thanks so much for trying that!

EDIT: I moved a sentence around before submitting and it was unclear.  Fixed.

Best Regards,

Maybe this is because of your VGA Card or Display driver settings in Max preference settings.

well let's rule these out

01) if viewport display was set to BBox...the heading would have been "Bounding Box'

02) if it was F3, Wireframe...the heading would have been 'Wireframe'

03) it's not F4 as heading would have been 'Realistic + Edged Faces'

You've shown Properties, Display As Box is NOT on, Display Properties is by Object, not Layer (if it was Layer, it's a potential culprit)

So I'm gonna ask you for a very simple test, in a new empty scene could you please drag out a sphere for me, I want to see with my own eyes if it magically transforms into a box....

(I admit I could be talking crap here cos I don't have 2015, I'm using 2016 to guess your situation)

Alfred, thank you so much for the help. Unfortunately, I uninstalled 3ds Max 2015 and downloaded 2017 to see if I'd have the same issue before I saw your message. I tried downloading the 2017 version while I still had 3ds Max 2015 but ran into some problems with that and so I felt it was best to completely get rid of the 2015 one.

When I first loaded the 2017 version I noticed that my entire viewport was black, and after a quick google search I was able to find the solution, which leads me to the conclusion that my initial problem in the 2015 version was most likely due to my unsupported graphics card. I tried out a few different options until I found one which seems to work perfectly so far.

My apologies for uninstalling 3ds Max 2015 and not being able to test your solution, but I truly appreciate all the help, thank you.

You are the nicest, @Anonymous!  Thank you very much for the update and for the confirmation about the card.  I'll go ahead and mark your post as the solution but if you need anything at all regarding this issue please feel free to post in this thread and I will appear.  If you need anything else just start a new thread and I'll be there as soon as possible.  Thanks again for your great attitude and informative post, kudos!

have you try this? :

select all the objects.

Right click and select OBJECT PROPERTIES

double click the box on "DISPLAY AS BOX" and make sure that it is unchecked before you click on OK.
