To turn off Selection highlight got to CUSTOMIZE > PREFRENCES and uncheck SELECTION/PREVIEW HIGHLIGHTS (See Attachment -1).

For the vertex issue, does restarting max Solve the issue?

Is the case true for any other object that you create? Can you try checking it's object properties, or viewport configurations to see if anything is messing with the display?

I checked both object properties and viewport config...and I don't see anything that would cause the problem ...not sure of what I should be looking for the vertices display properly in perspective, left views...but top view, front view don't display in vertex mode

FadhilJust to clarify...I only get this problem when I am working from a background reference image mapped to a plane

That shouldn't be a problem. Would you mind passing the file? Also which version of Max is it?

I see what the problem is... Your Image plane is blocking it. You're keeping the Reference image before the object while your viewport is in SHADED mode, meaning you won't see through the object.

What you really should've done is placed the FRONT reference image at the furthest point (the back), not at the front although it's the front.

I've done this correction in your file, please check it out (Attachment -1).
