Tapered cylindrical columns?

I'm trying to model an ancient doric temple, like this.  I want the columns to be larger at the base.  I'm very new to 3ds max and I've just been following tutorials, I attached what I have so far. columns.PNG

Apply a taper Modifier from the modifiers drop-down list. Make sure you have set the pivot point of the Column to the base before you attempt this. You can also adjust the gizmo of the modifier but I would suggest you adjust the object's pivot point instead.

The shape of a Doric column is not a simple tapered cylinder. In fact, they have a slight bulge and are positioned such that they lean inwards.

For better accuracy I would revolve a slightly concave spline about the column's centerline.

Here's an excellent article about Doric columns.

That's really interesting, thank you! I'm using the render just for a single still image to use as a composite with photography for an art history project, so it'll just be seen from the front. I'll look into that though, I'm sure my professor would appreciate the historical accuracy.
