Point to point edge selection not working in max 2024

Hi, I made the jump from max 2022 where if you click on an edge, hold shift and hover over other edges it'll create the shortest string of edges can find.

In max 2024 I can't figure out how this thing works. It can sometimes work the same if you have a perfect loop and quads, but 90% of the time it's only highlighting my selected edge and the edge I'm hovering over, it's not selecting anything in between. I've attached two gifs comparing both versions, it's quite obvious which is which.

I'm not sure if this was accidentally broken or the functionality has been permanently changed, or if I broke something somewhere, I can't find any information on this online. I can't find any settings menus for this, any help appreciated.

P.S point to point polygon selection still works exactly the same and it's great.

Seems broken for me too. Vert, poly etc. all still behave the same way, but point to point edge just does as you say and doesn't link up unless you're selecting a loop edge.

Found this thread:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-modeling/max-2023-2-2-point-to-point-edge-selection-not-worki...

It's been broken a while now with constant thread bumps and no sign of a fix. Supposedly bug MAXX-71184.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I guess I won't be making the upgrade or I guess "downgrade" to 2024 anytime soon if this is something that's been ignored by devs since max 23... shame.

Hi! We are really hoping Autodesk will bring back this feature. It's super helpful, and seems like an odd thing to just leave out. We haven't upgraded yet past Max2022...Can it please be brought back in the next update?

I wanted to introduce myself to everyone here. My name is Logan Foster and I am one of the Product Owners here at Autodesk working on 3ds Max. This thread was brought to my attention by our support team, so I wanted to give an update on the topic. But before I do, I want to thank everyone who has participated in this thread for your involvement. Engagements like this are important to the future of 3ds Max and continuing to drive it as a key 3D content creation tool. We do read these threads even if we aren’t always able to reply to them beyond the work our support teams provide.

With that said I must be the bearer of bad news to let you know that while we understand that some of you want to see a resolution to the point-to-point (shortest path) selection using SHIFT that have been brought up, this functionality was something that we have marked as deprecated back in 3ds Max 2022.1. This means is that we have no commitments currently to investigate these SHIFT point-to-point selection items that you have brought up here, as the development team and I are currently focused on other modeling related topics. I understand that this isn’t the answer that you want to hear, but that is the situation at this moment in time.

As a reminder for those that missed it, but as of 3ds Max 2022.1 you can perform point-to-point selection along the contiguous vertex, edge, or polygon loop/ring on an Editable Poly object or Edit Poly modifier using CTRL by selecting your first component in the point, then holding CTRL and double clicking to select the last component in the range. And alternatively, you can also deselect using the same method and the ALT key.

@logan_foster_adsk
I'm still finding myself missing this feature. The CNTRL double click method is OK but does not work as well as holding shift to select edges and being able to quickly make a "turn" in the edge selection. Whatever the shift behavior is doing now is pretty much useless. CNRTL double click often makes extra selection I don't want.
Hopefully you guys can find a way to bring this back. Thanks!
