Line morphs severely when adding any modifier

Hello,

I am making a cloth wich folds around itself, pretty simple.

For all cloth related jobs i use the same technique, and it always works out pretty well.

I make a line, place my Vertexes as desired, add extrude for the length, and then add a shell for the thickness.

I have done this for a few weeks now without any problems, and always use the same settings, but now all of a sudden it crashes severely without any reason. Wich is sometimes so frustrating about MAX, it works fine for weeks on end, and then all of a sudden it completely destroys itself without any reason...

Anyways, let me show you guys the steps i took:

Here is the modeled line, nothing special as far as i can see.

Now i use the extrude modifier and it warps itself in the bend to an extreme thin point (While extrude is not even supposed to add thickness...)

But i could live with that, but now lets add the shell modifer:

Now the overly thin edge dissapears, but it adds this strange blob.

It goed across the entire shape, and when i want to make a cut in my cloth with the use of a boolean operator, as soon at it reaches that blob, the entire scene crashes...

It looks like it a vertex point, but after having checked every option of that vertex it shows nothing abnormal

Anyone maybe knows a solution to this?

Thanks!

-Nick

What version of Max? What other plugins do you have installed? Was the spline imported from another app? If yes, which app and what version?

Have you tried 'Reset XForm' on the spline before adding modifiers?

You could also create a temporary spline and attach the problem spline to it then delete the temporary segment.

Or merge the problem spline into a new file and see if the problem persists.

Otherwise, it would be helpful to test the problem file (delete all the other stuff and save as a copy).

The direction of the Extrude seems wrong, unless you intended it to go in that direction.  But it is difficult to tell what angle you're viewing your model at.

The weird 'knot' blob you're seeing is likely due to a vertex there that has it's bezier handles in the wrong direction, causing a small loop in the spline.  Convert it to Smooth, then back to bezier or bezier corner, and adjust as needed.
