Aligning object based on face orientation.

the object's Xform was accidentally set in this new rotation which was arbitrary. So i cant just realign it based on the pivot.

I want to use a single polygon on the model to set the rotation of the whole model so that it aligns with the world without changing the shape of the model itself.

Seems like a very basic function, probably very easy to do, but i can not for the life of me figure out how to do it.

Appreciate any help.

Thankyou.

Which version of 3ds Max?

In newer versions you could use the "Place Working Pivot" and "Align Working Pivot" functions in the rt-click quad menu. Once the WP is placed that way you can use Snap Pivot >  Align Pivot to Working Pivot (again from the quad menu) to place the normal pivot.

After battling chat GPT and trying to suss this out, i figured it out about 2 minutes after posting this. Ill leave this up incase someone else, as daft as myself, needs it.

enable snap to verts.
Go to create > helper > Tape.
Click at one end of the polygon to create the tape head.
drag and click at the other end of the polygon to create the tape target.
Use select and link to link the object to the tape head.
select the tape head.
Right click "select and move" in the top menu.
Enter 0 for the Z height.
Select the tape target.
Enter 0 for the Z height.
The object will now be aligned on the Z axis.
Select the object.
select both tap and object and click unlink selection.
delete the tape object.

Thanks mate, I figured it out and have posted below. I did try using the working pivot but it had some funny behavior.

Thanks 🙂

You're not the first to have this issue.  My method is to enable AutoGrid and draw a Box primitive on the face I want to align to.  Then I have the exact rotation value I need to realign the messed up object.
