How to change wireframe color

Hi,

I am following a tutorial (old, 3ds max 14), new paid tutorials hardly teach us anythng. So I love one thing from there, When the tutor goes to the wireframe mode all geometry becomes black except the selected one. this is so cool. But in my 3ds max (3ds max 25) I do not have it. I googled and nothing helps me. I want the similar thing like am seeing in tutorial. Any way I can do that?

My eyes hurt when I see so many colors in wireframe mode and I forget which one is the selected one. Thank you.

By default, wire color is the same as the object color, which you can set by clicking that little green box in the create panel, under 'Name and Color' (image 2 above). I know there is an old script that has more options for controlling wire color, but the simplest way is select the object and change the color directly.

Thank you so much. I wish there was some way without changing the color. I will follow what you instructed as long as am not finding it. Thank you.

Here is what I like to do.  Go to Customize, Preferences, and in the lower right corner you'll see an option for Default to By Layer for New Nodes.  The color of any new objects will be controlled by the color of the layer they are on.

If you have objects already in the scene that you want to color by layer, select the objects and click the little color swatch next to the name.

Then click where it says By Object at the bottom of this window, so it says By Layer.

I've been using this workflow for many years, and like how my objects have their color match by the layer they are on.
