face mapping giving inconsistent UV angles

Im trying to avoid complex unwrapping  ( and hope to keep it as procedural as possible) by using face mapping in my UV map. I am applying a gradient texture. Its working pretty good, however there are occasional faces that do not respond as i would like....see grab. In order to fix this i can delete, the offending faces, then rebuild ( copy dragging the edge of good face...then welding)...this would be an ok solution if i did not have to do a lot of these objects.

 

So i would be very grateful if anyone has a solution ( to standardise the direction of all faces)

...i have tried 'editing and turning triangulation' of faces.

Thanks Gabrielle,

 

i'm pretty sure its not a mapping issue, as mentioned i can fix the offending faces by hand, was just hopping there might be some way of automating the process. I suspect there are some re-topology plugins that may essentially rebuild the mesh with all faces aligning in same direction.

That is indeed something that looks strange. Can you upload your Max scene so that we can take a look. I would agree that it's something up with the geometry but maybe a closer inspection will say what exactly it is.

hi...thanks for looking into this... file uploaded.

i don't actually think there is a problem with the geometry as such...the face mapping is somehow working according to how the faces were created ( perhaps the order of each vertex when originally created)

I'm just kind of after some kind of hack solution, that will some how make them all uniform. I've tried all the usual suspects...mainly resetting xform) As mentioned i think possibly some kind of plugin that cleans up the topology may work.

Try using the XYZ to UVW option...

hi, I'm certain its not a mapping issue, the whole 'hack' is based around the UV's being set to face mapping,( see initial jpg again, to see how grad flows with the geometry)  so i don't have to unwrap a load of geometry. What i was hoping for is something to rebuild any faces that are 'turned'. I have rebuilt the offending faces by hand by now...but am still curious as to whether there my be some new geometry editing tool i am missing. thanks again for you suggestions.
