black patch viewport

hello, i am following this lynda tutorial to 3d modelling. I am very new to 3dsmax. THe problem is that when i have set up my refrence images in the viewport and i press f for front view, the view is covered by a black patch partially

Hello!

The "black patch" appears to actually be a shadow.  The default light source is behind your plane, so you are seeing the corner of the plane casting a shadow.

Drop an omni light (top view) centered on your work area for a quick solution.  Once you turn your reference frames off (After modeling) this issue should go away.
