Affect Pivot does not work

Dear Autodesk Community,

I have a problem that absolutely drives me crazy! I am working with an inherited model and I already ungrouped, unlinked, and reset everything on each part of the model. Each component is an editable poly. When I try to use "Affect Pivot Only" it does not work! I've never seen this before. I did resetXform, collapse all, and it still does not work. When I click Affect Pivot Only the select and move tool for example moves the entire model (like if I did not select affect pivot only). I also noticed that reset transform and scale is greyed out. If I create a new object like a box or a cylinder the "affect pivot only" works. why is this? what makes an editable poly's pivot not editable? Thank you in advance, Blaze

Try the following and see if this does what you want.

After moving the pivot to where you want go to the Utilities Panel and click Reset XForm and then the Reset Selected button.

I tried this already unfortunately. Is this a layer problem? I really do not understand why it does not work.

It worked for me on a test file I created.  Do you have a simple file you can post where the process does not work?

Oh most definitely I have a file for you. See uploaded. and I really appreciate the help you are giving me. It is nice to know that I am not alone. Choose any of the model's poly parts. Just select affect pivot only first to see what i am talking about. Looking forward to hearing from you. and Again thank you for your time.

Can you post the file in a Max 2020 compatible format?  I haven't upgraded to 2021 yet.

Yes certainly. This is absolutely driving me nuts:) All day I am trying to fix this because I need to animate this object and nothing behaves like ti is supposed to. You are my only hope! If you need another format let me know.

I did the following:

  1. Opened robot movement learning2020 and selected cocpit.
  2. With Select and Move active I went to Hierarchy  and clicked Adjust Pivot Reset pivot and the pivot jumped to the left foot.  I assume this is where you want the pivot to stay where it was.

Second try:

  1. Opened robot movement learning2020 and selected cocpit.
  2.  With Select and Move active I went to the Utilities panel and clicked Reset XForm and the Reset Selected.
  3. Went to Hierarchy and clicked Reset Pivot.  The pivot did not move.  I assume this is what you want.  Yes?

Not exactly sure I understand. I wanted you to see that when i try to "affect pivot only" on any object like the cockpit (which is supposed to allow me to move the pivot point alone but not the entire object) I am unable to do so. The affect pivot only feature does not work on this model. I do not understand why.

You know what? The cockpit works! Try the foot! that is where my problem is. Somehow the foot does not work. when you select "affect pivot only" in the hierarchy panel, and you try to move the pivot of the foot it moves the whole object.

It surely works for me.  I select cocpit and Affect Pivot Only and move the pivot as desired.  I thought the issue you were having was that the pivot could be set back to its original position and you did not want that.

Note, unrelated to your question I noticed that you display and system units are different.  This could cause you problems when using expression controllers.

I was not able to use Affect Pivot Only on Foot1.  Interesting.  Where was the part created?

I did find a workaround.  I Export Selected foot1 in a 3ds format then imported the .3ds file.  I was able to move the pivot on the imported foot.  Be sure to uncheck convert units when doing the import.

That worked! It even works with exporting FBX for me. at least I am not losing my mind...I bought the model online and then tried to strip off all the animations and linking because the animation sequence was not to my liking only the model was. whatever the original artist intended it clearly gave me a headache...Appreciate your help! Will move on now with the fixed foot!

In China, like everything else, why would you ask something like that😁

What is the logic behind that???

Snapshot (as a mesh) would clear the mesh/es from unwanted "things", without exporting/importing.

That is property of bones.

If you open Bones Tools and select some of problematic objects I'm sure you'll see "Bones on" checked.

To make it stop behave like that just uncheck that.

"Turning" that kind of (separate) objects in to bones seems like better solution than creating new bones (with bunch of extra manipulators - like you can see in most "costume bones rigs" tutorials.

It doesn't work for me...I tried with export - import both as 3ds, and as FBX, but it didn't help...
