Viewport Canvas - Bodypaint Replacement

Viewport Canvas - Bodypaint Replacement

Enhancing viewport canvas to be something like maxon bodypaint, (with faster response when using bigger textures, with projection things from part of image to a object, etc..)

Could I add to also implement the ability to paint HDR values as well? This would make possible to also paint lights directly on the scene!

Add on top of that:

  • Ability to view all materials, maps, channels at once.
  • Arbitrary texture folders
  • Not messing up bitmap gamma
  • Not painting on backsides

Use mudbox paint tools, layers and workspace style for viewport canvas

This could be a massive workflow efficiency boost for many people.

What about also add Directional Aware strokes? This way we can easily paint flow maps? It is not that complicate if you already dive into to improve and fix it anyway 😉

Want to be able to paint image sequences using the camera or viewport or light view as the image dimensions

To add onto this and expand on the gamma point above:

  1. It disrespects Gamma. It switches the Viewport to Linear space during painting, but Layer View and 2D View show as double-Linear. On save, sometimes it converts back to Gamma space, sometimes it saves in Linear. This causes incorrect colors to be painted, and saved.
  2. If a PSD is loaded, and it has non-image layers (shapes, text, adjustment layers, smart layers, layer masks, etc.) then on save it will destroy those, rasterizing or emptying them.
  3. It ignores Bitmap transforms in the material. If you have any tiling or offset or angle, this is ignored during painting.

I like @lorddavius idea of painting HDR values right into the scene. That suggests intriguing possibilities.

If we are working in multiple display, then we must able to work in two or more screens. view port tearing option (like in Maya) should be big help.

I think that if this is going to be made in some point, it should add some material painting functionality instead of just painting in layers. And should be something like a mode so the user could have a lot of hotkeys assigned to it and work faster, manipulating the brushes and even assigning different brushes to keys, way more flexible, like in mudbox, or a painting soft like Autodesk Sketchbook. Also is there any tool that can create a curvature map, like in Substance, so you can edit materials for the hard edges of the model?

And being a core system tool it will be faster instead of being a script.

Add PBR Painting.

By the time this gets into the pipeline we will probably all be pensioners and PBR won't even be a thing. So don't hold your breath!  😛

I also strongly request improvements to the Viewport canvas and addition of new features. This is because texture creation is important for architecture, industrial products, and character animation.
Or rather, are the developers really looking at this?
