Soft blending between boolean meshes like Modo Meshfusion

Soft blending between boolean meshes like Modo Meshfusion

Modo Meshfusion can create topology based chamfers between boolean polygonal meshes. The current boolean implementations in 3ds Max are only useful as either a starting point for modeling in combination with Quadify or Quad Chamfer To simulate rounding. However these last options only work on quite simple and mostly flat meshes.

The main code of an Autodesk alternative to Modo's MeshFusion could also re-used in for example Maya. This is the main advantage of Modo over 3dsmax and Maya at the moment (for me).

I keep saying, this is the one priority Autodesk should focus on for 3dsmax! I can't think of anything more important for 3dsmax.

The fact that new(old)booleans create a hidden spline at bool intersections MUST mean that this feature is only a hair away.

I think 3ds Max has been quite active in updates the last couple of years. I think would be unfair to say the opposite.

What the people perhaps misses is more innovation in the polygon modeler side, that has received less updates and it is the core of the program.

The new spline booleans help in that direction but would be cool more things like that, for example more advanced mesh booleans.

I think that it would be best if 3dsmax could integrate soft-blended polygon based booleans like (Modo, Houdini and Maya Hardmesh) and also Fusion 360 'solid' modeling within the 3dsmax interface. They serve different purposes.

  • Polygon modeling can be great for certain shapes and control over forms. Being able to use soft blended booleans on them is (part of) the future for poly modeling.
  • Solids modeling like Fusion360, integrated into the 3dsmax interface, would give you the opportunity to see the result inside the scene/character instead of having to guess by working back and forth between 3dsmax and fusion.

Both features would be invaluable to modelers like me. I really like the addition of the spline booleans, but I really think the next step should be soft blended polygon based booleans and integration of fusion 360.

The ironic thing is that Max has had the most powerful nurbs/solid modeling toolkit for over 10 years. Unfortunately it's in the form of a hopelessly outdated and overpriced plugin suite called Powernurbs/Powersolids. It's by the same company that created Proboolean(NPower) It is extremely powerful with some excellent features, but it is one of the most buggy tools I have ever used. The company still sell it(for a ridiculously high price) and recompile it for new versions of Max. However, they haven't bothered to add anything new or fix the endless bugs. Even the handful of official video tutorials(or the website) haven't been updated in years.

I got to use it for a while on Max 2014 and was very impressed with the features, and very depressed with the bugs. It has the best filleting/chamfering out of any Nurbs/solids programs I've used. and with Max's best in the business spline tools it really could have been something.

so, is there an update for this request? I'm looking at Maya's Hardmesh Plugin and I am so jealous. Please autodesk give us a tool like Maya's Hardmesh

Autodesk, please. It is probably the most requested feature Game Artists that use Max want!

It passed more then a year since I requested this feature, I dont think this will be added anytime soon, or ever. Seems like they care only for the ArchViz people and UI changes every release. Nice work Autodesk.

yea im pretty frustrated myself and opened a new discussion

Mesh Fusion like in Modo. It`s great alternative 2 classic ProBool

like this smoothing booleans and autoretopo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdSokL0HY0s&t=98s

+ live booleans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HqA3Mn7fIw

because that of probooleans and putting instances is too annoying because you do not model yourself without moving the piece

with this 3ds max would be leader

2020 roadmap2020 roadmap

bumping this. I  really hope it will be in a modifier form where you can edit the operands and the intersection chamfer in realtime, smoothing/normal artifact-free on the mesh intersections and of course good performance when performing booleans on turbosmoothed objects

Any news on this? Years passing by and still nothing, and tons of people waiting for this feature.

I hope their booleans roadmap will address this too

Meh. I just switched to blender. Life is better now.

to be honest the 3ds max roadmap (the beta and future stuff) at least in what regards asset creation and 3d design in general and modeling in particular is far more promising and exciting. In Blender there is only sculpting.

Not going to extend this thread to a debate about application superiority,
but I will say that statement is false. And I'd recommend anyone reading
this to try blender. There's no way I'm switching back. It's way ahead of
the game.

Just to bump this, Harmesh has come out with a Max version, though frustratingly they haven't release the 2022 build yet. It's very nice but there are some workflow issues, primarily having the live blending always on hurts performance pretty quickly. Also it's set to Subdivide the models by default, easy to turn off but can get annoying.

As well Smooth Boolean can be pretty good but it's finicky, and doesn't have allot of important features like adjusting the sharpness of the bevel. It's nice in that you can get most of your design done with the faster pro-boolean system and then chamfer the edges after. Also it works in 2022.

It's still seems like mesh fusion is superior though, especially with the recent updates, even Belnder with Hardops is better in allot of ways.

This workflow is pretty fundamental to modern hard surface work, and Max needs a native, fast and robust solution for it.

Hope this can be achieved with the New boolean modifier and Volume modifiers on the roadmap

@Kranos_Orphydian Probably not, it passed 5 years since we asked asked for this feature. But at least we got tons of "chamfer update" that I have not used in like 7 years.

All the guys that I know and work in the industry at least for games, they use boolean and add the bevels in Zbrush or Blender. Maybe it will get done when we are old and done with 3D but I still have hope that it will get implemented.

How cool would be that? A system like CAD boolean and fillets but with polygons. That would be amazing.
