I like to do non-destructive skinning - I have very simple characters that share a rig. I only use envelopes that include/exclude vertices which allows me to do more drastic changes to the underlying mesh without having to completely redo skinning (I mostly just need to re-exclude/include some verts). This is great for my workflow.
However I wish I could manipulate the envelope more to better match the shapes I'm trying to represent. Especially when volumes tend to overlap or if I need to make an envelope very large to encompass a part of the mesh (which might result in too much change to the distribution of weighting).
I would suggest the ability to add (either by default or opt-in) an "anchor point" to cross sections. Currently there's 2 - at either end of the cupsule shape. I see how that makes sense when using bones (long objects) but even bones are not always linear. Furthermore (and this is a personal preference) I tend to use helper objects as bones that are more agnostic in terms of what shape they represent - being able to "shape" the influence would be awesome.
On a side note (could be a new "idea"); being able to "reset" and envelope would similarly be helpful.
