Doing archviz one of the most frustrating things to deal with day in and day out is Revit! The translation to Max stinks to put it lightly but what do you expect it is converting to fbx in the background. In recent releases I think starting in 2016 they made the Revit models brought into Max appear nice and clean but under the surface its a mess seen mostly with curved objects.
First issue is by default it is an "editable mesh" which no one works with anymore. Everything should and needs to come in as Editable Poly.
For anyone that has ever placed a Edit Poly modifier on top of the linked Edit Mesh Revit object you have most likely seen surfaces just disappear or get all gnarled up. It is caused by the fact that in order to get the appearance of a nice smooth surface of the curve on import, Max is hiding edges on the mesh.
To solve this currently you need to first place an Edit Mesh modifier on the object, go to edge mode hit the button to make all visible. You now see all the edges and how much of a mess the fbx translation is of randomized triangles, quads and ngons really is.
What I would really love to see is proper quad mesh import/link of a Revit file into Max. Something you can set a mesh density to determine the smoothness of a mesh almost something like Mudbox. Max already shows that is can detect an edge loop of a surface in the current way it imports so why not give us a nice clean poly mesh to work with from the start!
