Make Autosave Efficient

Make Autosave Efficient

When you have a heavy scene the autosave function locks up  max and interrupts your work flow. Also sometimes it starts to save when you are in the middle of a complex setup which may lead to a crash. It would be great if the auto save happened without affecting the current session of max.

I swear to god I lose days of my life waiting for this insanely crappy autosave system. At least run it on another thread of something so we can keep working. I mean christ this software is decades old and still it decides to try and autosave when i have a save dialog open. Stop implementing features because youve bought a company and want to bolt it onto max and start actually fixing stuff that your core user base needs and locks horns with on a daily basis.

So Autodesk, it's been over 2 years since our suggestion, which was under review, then consideration... has there been any movement at all on implementing background saving? Not just for autosave but regular saving too, in the style of Adobe apps?  We're still losing an incredibly huge amount of time sitting waiting for files to save. Many of our studio's max files are over 1GB and can take ages to save.

Here's a bit of a (updated) quote from our original post:

"Let's say 1 min per save, per artist, and 10 saves per day (conservative estimate!) = 10 mins per artist per day with max locked. x 10 artists = 100 mins per day or 500 mins/8.33hrs per week spent waiting for max to save, lost, all of which is costing us money.

We are regularly working with very large and complex master files, which themselves are complex, but also xref in a large number of equally complex xref files. Each one of those can take significant time to write. If all of that can be done in the background that translates to huge time savings and that saves us money."

Making it faster is fantastic. Making it invisible would be where we all want to be.

Absolutely agree. Ive seen your work and those scenes cannot be small.

Youre definitely not alone in wanting an update on this. Every single day im sat waiting for autosaves to finish. It should happen in the background and not interrupt my work at all otherwise it might as well just be a message box that asks me if i want to autosave or not. Even that would be less disruptive than the current system.

Its laughable that this hasnt been sorted yet despite the amount of service packs and max versions. But then again Autodesk have a history of leaving things completely broken for years in the rusty unorganised bucket of tools that is 3ds max.

Autodesk. Please make this a priority for one of the 2020 service packs. We beg of you.

Hi everyone,

We are very sorry that you experience loss of productivity due to autosave (and file save) when working on large scenes.

We have heard you loud and clear, and we have prioritized addressing the issues with autosave, that you raised here in this 3ds Max Ideas post. As a result, there is now an item in our backlog to work on this and directly address the problem. As usual though, we cannot provide insight as to when such fix would be delivered, but we still wanted you to know that we have prioritized this based on your feedback.

We do take your ideas and votes seriously. Several ideas were accepted, while others are under review, so your collective feedback does translate into tangible results. I’d like to thank you all for the information you have given us so far about autosave in your comments. They are really helpful. We will do everything we can to minimize the disruption autosave and file save create on your workflows.

Best regards,

Attila Szabo

Thank you for the update, Attila. It's good to know this is high on your agenda. It's hard to overstate how significant a bonus this will be to your customers.

This was reportedly improved and deemed 'fixed' by Autodesk. I like to inform Autodesk that it is not fixed in the slightest.

The goal here is to stop the user from being interrupted by the autosave function. That's it.

Please see Blender for how this might work. You can take a look at the source code if you need to know how they have accomplished it. Autodesk 3ds max autosave is the biggest time waster in our entire pipeline. Never mind speeding up high poly scenes or improving FPS on shaded viewport. Rewrite autosave. Don't try to patch it or improve it.

Especially when a large number of objects is used, e.g. Forest Pack, the autosave speed is several times slower than the usual manual Save. It would be wonderful if you introduced a multi-threaded opening and saving the scene. Some big scenes open a lot of time in the meantime asking many questions about changing the scale of individual objects (the "apply to all" option is missing) ..

Further to this, it would be fantastic if the saving process was invisible/uninterruptive like it is in Photoshop. I'd get far less frustrated with max crashing if I could save more often without interrupting my workflow.

Would be great to see this on the roadmap @attilaszabo sometime soon. Just as a case in point autosave just locked up my 32 core/128GB machine for 5 minutes to save a single kitchen scene. Definitely needs sorting.

Completely agree with all of these.  The big brain idea would be what several of you suggested:  Like Photoshop to save and continue working while saving...I don't know how many times we're just sitting waiting for a 1GB file to save.

that would be a game changer for us!

We just need 3ds max auto-save working in background with multi-threading, like in After Effects and many other different programs. That's it.

Hello Autodesk... it's been 4 years since this was requested. Can we have an update please? We're finding it hard to believe that 3ds max can't be updated to accommodate background saving. A hopefully simple enough mechanism the same way Adobe apps work would be an enormous time-saver.

If Photoshop can handle it totally seamlessly with huge 2GB size complex PSB files then surely 3ds max can too...

We are all guilty of hitting the Esc. key when Autobak kicks in and we're in the middle of some vital process, at some point resulting in lost work when something goes wrong. This would totally fix that productivity killer.

Pretty please with a cherry on top!!

Yes, I'll reiterate my vote for this. I work in Blender also and the difference in productivity is stark! I would literally gain an hour of production each day if it were not for this.

If it's really difficult to implement we'll totally understand if it takes a little while.. but please don't just ignore it or find another attempt at a workaround though. Let's have a proper solution here Autodesk! We believe in you! Or at least the cost of the subs tells us we should.

Does anyone at all have a workaround/fix/suggestions for the continuous autosave? like every 3 -5 minutes. I don't have a heavy scene at all. It comes on if I just happen to move my material browser or an object. I'm deeply frustrated! A presentation that would typically take me a day or two has stretched to three and counting because of these constant interruptions

Clicking cancel also takes time to execute.

Would be eternally grateful for any suggestions!!

I have finally decided to comment on this, though I have fought for many years with max's Autosave feature. Whilst autosaving is obviously invaluable, I completely agree with the OP's suggestion, I have exactly the same comment as @Anonymous  and handle the scenes in the same way. It is extremely frustrating to be in the middle of a command or with a dialogue open, to then have to wait for 1-5 minutes for an autosave to complete. At the very least, can 3dsmax understand when a user is in the middle of a process, such as when a dialogue box is open, and wait until after the operation?

I see that this is currently under review, but it has been for about 3 or 4 years now... I can't emphasise enough how annoying it is for EVERYONE I know who works with 3ds max, it would be great if someone from Autodesk could update us here if possible. Thanks in advance

PS I wrote the above comment during an autosave!!

@EMR20003 Just in response to your comment - did you know you can change how often (or indeed whether) 3dsmax autosaves? If you navigate to 'customise - preferences - files tab, you will see in Auto Backup section your options. Ignore me if you already know this, but it seemed to the be the issue to me from what you've said.

Simple - Max shouldn't autosave when the mouse is moving, or hasn't moved for a number of seconds (set by user).
