Make Autosave Efficient

Make Autosave Efficient

When you have a heavy scene the autosave function locks up  max and interrupts your work flow. Also sometimes it starts to save when you are in the middle of a complex setup which may lead to a crash. It would be great if the auto save happened without affecting the current session of max.

autosave is a pain especially when it kicks in while another dialog is active. IMHO, autosave should always wait for a minimal time period (e.g. 1 sec) without keyboard or mouse events before it kicks in. Nothing more annoying than being interrupted by autosave in the middle of some action.

Sounds simple and effective! I'm going to see about getting the devs to look into this. Thanks for the idea!

also, give auto save a prompt option like Maya. please and thank you!

Although the autosave feature is indispensable, when working with large scenes it can be painfully disruptive.

What would be great would be some type of warning that it is about to occur, and the ability to cancel it before it begins and locks down the programme for the duration of the saving process. From memory mudbox has/had this feature.

Thanks

So whats happening to this suggestion that needs to be implemented?

Autodesk??

I've actually spoken to some of the developers recently at Autodesk. I mentioned this issue. I explained from a users point of view how frustrating it is and how a little bit of creative thinking could make a huge difference.

autosave set to 10minutes

10minutes is up, time to autosave

halt, query; has the user made any significant changes since the last autosave?

yes/no

no: reset counter

yes; action autosave.

Not hard, makes a huge difference. I like to call this low hanging fruit.

after updating to 2019.3 something has improved and it's much, the autosave of the big scene runs many times faster 🙂 and without crash. The scene that was autosaved earlier for a few minutes, now it does it in a dozen or so seconds.

Good stuff! Thanks for this.

Don't tell anyone Autodesk, someone might find out you're actually doing good work. #irony

Hi Marcel and Danny,

Autosave's real and perceived speed can be impacted by quite a few things. Scene data size, missing and non-missing assets, what have changed in the scene (ex: a selection change would trigger an autosave), etc.

As we work on improving Autosave, we are releasing those improvements in 3ds Max Updates, so you might see improvements when autosaving some of your scenes, but not for others.

We are going to announce that we fixed Autosave when all cases we know of have been addressed, and validated them with our beta users. If you are interested, please apply to the 3ds Max beta: https://beta.autodesk.com/key/3dsMaxBetaApplication. We are looking forward to have you among our beta users.

Best regards,

Thanks for your reply and the in-depth information!

In my opinion, a selection change should absolutely not trigger an autosave. I think there is more work to be done on autosave but I understand closing the case for now. Fixed is quite final. Maybe you could say it's been improved 😊

I'd like to see an autosave that doesn't lock up the interface, allowing the user to keep working (See: Blender) That would be incredible. Imagine 10 users in a team not having to down tools to wait for an autosave every 20 minutes. That's 5 hours of production per day that would be retrieved! per day!

Food for thought?

Thanks again

That would be the ideal solution. But for now it has been improved by cancelling the autosave by pressing ESC 🙂 Earlier it didn't want to work practically never, but after the update it works in 90% of cases.

Very good to know. I can live with that for now.

I used to lean my mug on the esc key and sit back and wait.

one that allows you to keep working while it does its thing instead of interrupting you 30x a day. I mean if you got interrupted needlessly 30x a day, every day, it would wear on you.

It is time, I know you guys can do it.

Being able to hit the ESC key is an improvement, though max still locks up.

I think the issue that is being avoided by autodesk is that the average max file isnt a couple of hundred KB any for, they are many 10s if not 100s of megabytes. Once the process is initiated, hitting esc will still take a minute or two, totally disrupting what you were doing.

My keyboard esc key is about to go into retirement with the amount of punishment it gets....

I could actually add to my above entry, the fact that pressing ESC should be as soon as possible, as soon as you see a spinning circle next to the mouse pointer 🙂 Then it works for me right away even at over 200mb of the scene. When I'm late well, with an improved autosave I have to wait those 5-10 seconds for such a big scene 🙂 So it's not a problem.

E.g. don't run whilst the load, save, merge file etc. dialogues are open.

Yes, agree. Someone in our studio wrote an autosave timer in maxscript. It kinda worked but I think 'intelligence' is the absolute right word in this case. For you example and many others, exceptions should be made so Autosave doesn't interrupt the flow of work. I've been told that Autodesk have improved this feature but all they've really done is make the saves faster. That's not an acceptable solution in my opinion.

That's not a bad idea... and really simple to implement.

I would say that even though a lot of suggestions here are good, the auto save in 3ds Max should be fixed properly once and for all (redesigned and rewritten if nescessary) to be fully automatic and without freezing the program at all. It’s been proven over and over in other software that this is possible. There are already scripts available that improves the auto save slightly, but Autodesk should make it completely seamless and save in the background without the user noticing anything at all.
