Free or affordable education software version for self-studying enthusiasts?

Not trying to be difficult just curious what Autodesk thinks about this.

There are honest people out there who truly cannot afford an education or maya, and are honest enough to decide against pirated software if an actual affordable legal option is available. 

Would Autodesk ever consider releasing a low-cost or free subscription license for people who are working low-paying day jobs but are trying to learn the software in their own time?

(Couldn't find Maya in the product list so I chose 3ds max instead)

Hi @Anonymous! Thanks for posting the Idea. As you mentioned, this is more of a Maya request so I will archive it as such. However, I will do my best to answer your question as we've had similar requests on the Max side of things. Our product teams do not set the prices, so even if this was a Max request I would still need to archive this. I will pass on the request however.

First off, I wanted to say that I appreciate your candidness about not wanting to pirate software. Regarding pricing in general, even if you were able to find some work for a few hours a week, the price isn't too high if you look at as a per hour basis. I would look at the possible hourly rate impact if you look at the subscription price vs. how many hours you end to use it in a given month. I've always found that I've learned the best on actual work if I'm not in a school setting. You could also check with your local reseller to see if there are options for you.

There is also the option of Maya LT if you're mainly want to learn modeling, texturing, and animation before going to Maya or 3ds Max. That is currently at $30/month USD. Additionally, there is Fusion 360 that is available for free for smaller shops or for people wanting to learning high detailed solid modeling.

Finally, there's of course the educational license available that is free to use to learn for up to 3 years.

Thanks Electrocast 🙂 Sorry for the inconvenience caused and thanks your kind answer. We are living outside of US so the pay rate is not quite the same. Maya LT is more affordable but does not have the same rigging functionalities as Maya. Nevertheless thank you for the suggestion! I will keep it in consideration.
