Display automatically material bitmaps in display when assigned

Currently is not possible and you need to do it manually each single time. We can use the icon to display bitmap in display or enable the “realistic/standard materials in display” option. But this only affects the current materials and for any new bitmap we need to repeat the same operation.

We need to be able to toggle the option where any new bitmap will be displayed automatically.

Currently is a waste of time for a process that should be transparent for the user. I remember countless times pressing that "show shaded material in display" that also is confusing as it quite similar to "show background in preview". Lets get rid of unnecessary steps.

In addition it would provide feedback to the user that the material has been applied. In multiple times we apply the material but the object was unselected by accident, we press "display bitmap in display" nothing happens, we press again... until we realize it was not assigned and repeat the full process: apply material, press "display bitmap in display"  etc. Yes, I know there is a hint for material applied and selected, easy to miss.

This would be avoided as displaying the bitmap would automatically hint any problem.

This is possible to do in the Viewport settings itself. Go to Standard tab in the viewport > Materials > Shaded materials with Maps. Then any material you add to an object will make its bitmaps visible.

Thanks for your reply. Iit only works with existing materials.  Any new material with bitmaps will be ignore and you need to repeat it again. That was the point of my entry.

Ah, yes. I just tried it as well. That may be a bug for that setting or by design. We'll have one of the teams look into it and follow up. If it's a bug, we'll archive this and fix it. If it's by design we'll change the status of this and see about getting it into the backlog.
