Chamfer vertex - topology fix/improvement

Chamfer vertex - topology fix/improvement

A simple vertex chamfer doesn't create a smooth result. The topology is ugly and the more segments the worse it looks.

After cleaning up the topology and adding a meshsmooth by smoothing group the result is much better but the resulting curve is still not what it should be.

The chamfer tool needs better topology that can give a clean result with the correct curvature.

how do other software deal with this?

Interesting. Setting the depth to -0.5 yields very smooth results but obviously not what OP is looking for. Setting depth to 0.5 isn't smooth. I feel like it's the center "box" that is causing this special case issue - the topology can't flow correctly and we get "pinching" towards the edges of the rounded parts. Maybe the solution would be that the modifier "switches" to a triangular topology in this case.

Hmm. Seems like Blender is having similar issues although it uses triangles - the pinching happens at the corners rather than the midpoint of the curves.
