Automatic Retopology Tools

Automatic Retopology Tools

I would love to see tools in Max that allow us to clean up crappy CAD models and high poly count geometry into usable, "watertight" meshes with the click of a few buttons. Something along the lines of ZRemesher/Dynamesh, but with more options to deal with meshes that have holes or unwelded verts.

Good news!

Status changed to "accepted" ... does this mean that Autodesk is now officially considering auto retopology tools, or does it mean that Autodesk is officially accepting this as a future feature ?  Excited either way. @brentscannell

When we changed it to under-review, it was because we were starting to research this topic for feasibility as feature for 3ds Max. Accepted means that we've done enough research around this to consider this both valuable as well as feasible, and we'd like to officially start putting this into the plan. I can't comment about when this might actually make it into a public release or anything like that, but I can add a reminder to come tag this thread as soon as something available to test as part of our beta program.

Finally accepted. We are getting there.

Any chance that imported Nurbs geometry (from Rhino, Revit, Fusion, Inventor etc.) could be remeshed with this tool to have native polygonal geometry?

Sure! Why not? Personally, I think there are likely lower hanging fruit to bring the geometry into 3ds Max natively as quad-dominant meshes, since we do the mesh generation on important from nurbs data, however it's certainly possible to dream about how re-topology tools could be used during mesh cleanup/conversion for data that we have less control over during import time.

While I may be drifting off-topic for a little, I recall having tested importing a freeform surface made in Revit. The geometry could not be modified properly (e.g. UV mapping or even conversion to editable poly) and certainly didn't seem to have be a mesh  although it is an actual editable mesh.

Actually, here's the example:
ImportedNurbs-Mesh.png

The mesh is on the left, an edit poly/ editable poly on the right (same result).

In case you'd like to receive more information on this particular file, please let me know.

Do you happen to still have that file? If so could it be used for testing in the future?

@Intuos5 This looks like it could have derived from NURBS and got triangulated badly?

@yianniskIt is indeed derived from NURBS geometry.

What is the current status here?

@chroma123 there are at least 3 retopology modifiers previewed on the roadmap, in the beta I suppose.

@chroma123 Retopology is currently in the 3ds Max beta. If you would like to participate in the beta please let us know.

@Kranos_Orphydian There is actually only 1 modifier. The videos on the roadmap are captures of various states of this effort.

@logan_foster_adsk the interfaces look way different. Which is the more up to date ? that with curve constraints on the future roadmap section ? what is the decided latest name for it ?

there are at least 3 iteration of a retopology modifier on their roadmap. Dont know which is the one they decided upon

@Kranos_Orphydian  All three!  🙂 And it's awesome!

Ya we decided to go with 3 options so that you could utilize what will work best in that moment. For some added fun stack retopology modifiers and use it to work your way to your intended target.
