Add Roughness Support to Nitrous Previews

Add Roughness Support to Nitrous Previews

Since the focus of realtime preview development seems to be on Nitrous features currently instead of on ShaderFX/DirectX shaders, it would be beneficial to add support for roughness/smoothness maps. The other crucial preview features (normals, metalness, AO, shadows, HDRI maps) are sort of there like Mr Eloi Andaluz showed in his recent, great video. However, the lack of accurate roughness still makes the materials look a bit off compared to an actual render / PBR shader preview.

Nitrous can provide good-looking previews which is very nice, but certain shortcomings such as this (and lack of planar reflections for example) still don't really make it a viable option for proper rendering of materials. Real-time previews in Max viewport still need more love in one form or another.

Hi @MI66 and other voters on this idea. The team is current doing some research in this area, and it would be quite an undertaking to make this compatible with all legacy materials and shaders etc.

Can you help us build of prioritized list of materials to support?

Hello @brentscannell ! Glad to hear the team is looking into this. Personally, I would be happy if it worked with Physical Material since that seems to be the standard anyway at the moment. What I still use a lot however in the viewport is the legacy Standard material (and it does have a glossiness input... 🙂 ). I'm assuming combining materials like Multi/Sub-Object don't have to be mentioned separately..?

I'm sure other users will be able to pitch in more. Good luck with the development!

Arnold's Standard Surface  material should be supported first of all...

I agree with both, Arnold's Standard Surface and Physical Material should be the priority IMHO.

@Kranos_Orphydian Have you had a chance to play with the latest updates to 3ds Max 2020? The roughness parameter for physical materials had support in the viewport (in Realistic mode) since 2020.2 Update. I'm considering marking this idea as 'Implemented'
