Hi, it looks like you are using two different alpha levels. Check to see if your bitmap is the same as the scene alpha... it should be 2.2 for most regular uses.

Viewport Canvas is something I use a lot. But it does suffer from being unintelligent about image gamma. As soon as you load it up, it is prone to immediately change the gamma of your image in the viewport.

Oops, I obviously meant Gamma. Doh!
Sounds like a nasty 'feature' alright.
