Titan X Maxwell and 3ds MAX 2017 display driver problems

Hi all,

I have some serious display issues with 3ds MAX 2017 _vray 3.4- Titan X on Windows 10 anniversary.  Both for DX9 and DX11, i have tried 5 drivers so far.

First of all objects disappear . I like to have my viewport with shaded materials , textures and default lights.

When opening a new file in order to see things properly ( without missing objects) i need to change viewport quality, to performance then start playing with the settings until i can see standard shaded materials with textures.

Sometimes i have to go from standard to performance then click standard in order to fix the problem. Sometimes this doesn't work and i have to put realistic materials and click like a maniac on different settings until i can see my textures.

High quality crashes completely from time to time.

All this happens in tiny scenes with 200K polygons. I tried with DX9 and DX11. DX9 crashes max much more often than DX11 so i am not using that anymore.

IS there any workaround ?

Hello @alexnode,

Thank you for the details and for creating a new thread for this specific issue.  Would you be willing to post a video of what is happening?  You can use Screencast, it's free if you don't have screen recording software.  I'd like to make sure I can understand exactly what is happening.  Also, if you have a demo file to attach that would be great.  There may be 2 issues at play here.  Thank you very much for your time.

Hello @alexnode,

Thank you for sending the movie, it does a great job illustrating the problem.  I'm currently unfamiliar with this issue and looking into it.  Rather than guess about this I want to do a bit more research into it so I can make some suggestions for you.  Does this also happen in DX9 mode?  I'm not sure this is a problem with your drivers but possibly a problem in 3ds Max.

Hello @alexnode,

My fault, I see you'd mentioned that in your original post.  I am looking into this today, need to look over old cases that are similar.

Hello @alexnode,

The general consensus is that this is a driver issue.  I'm going to send a link to a new folder, if you don't mind the QA department would love to take a look at the file because the title bar going black is apparently a very strange thing to happen and they'd like to take a look.  Is that doable?  You'll get an email invite to a new folder shortly.

No problem @alexnode,

File is still uploading, when it finishes I will forward it to QA and Dev team.  One suggest for the time being was to turn off adaptive degradation, do you see any improvement when you do that?

I have to say that adaptive degradation isn't helping much. I had a lot of crashes yesterday, as my scene becomes more complicated problems appear. And it is all related to graphics. My save times also are becoming long.

Hello @alexnode,

Thanks for uploading the file.  This seems to be an issue with VrayBlendMtl.  When I use any other type of material on your roof it does not disappear.  I've spent about 30 minutes testing on this and I'm confident this isn't a Max or driver issue but an issue with VrayBlendMtl.  You might want to run this by Vlado.

I also merged everything into the scene (no Xref) and the problem persists, so it's not related to XRef's either.  Please let me know if you find that this doesn't work for you.  As far as saving time, the scene you sent me saves for me in about 3 seconds.  I hope this is helpful.

Thank you Alfred i will talk to the Vray people. Just to mention that the second video has a simple vray material.

Thank you @alexnode,

It may be that something under the hood isn't acting the way that Vlado expects it to, and if it turns out a Max issue under the hood is causing this in Vray he'll usually point out exactly where.  If it's a Vray issue CG won't take long to fix those usually, but if it's a Max SDK issue I'll log it right away.  I'll check on the Vray thread as well in the CG forums if I can find it.

Thanks for keeping me posted @alexnode!

It looks like there was some confirmation that it's a VRay issue by one of the QA people there.  Thanks for taking the time to communicate with me on this.  Hopefully a resolution is found.

Hello @alexnode,

I wanted to touch base on this issue again, I have recently been informed that for some people the following has alleviated the crash in high quality mode.

"... the "Crash" seems to disappear after I have changed 3d settings in NVIDIA control panel. Actually I did not do much, I just selected  "use the advanced 3d image settings"  under "adjust image settings with preview" option. Don't know why, but by changing this protects me from crashing when switching to high quality mode."

Would you please try this and let me know if it helps with your general crashing issue?  Thanks very much.

in March 2017 when I finish my current project. Hope things will be better
by then.
