moving vertex doesn't affect part of what it should

first of all sorry for the badly worded title I'm not good at explaining things.

anyway when i was making a object i noticed that when i moved the vertices something weird was happening. that was it didn't move all of what it should. it looks as if there are two edges, creating triangles when there aren't edges there.

i just created a box real quick and pulled its vertex forward so you can get an idea as to what happens hopefully the picture explains it better then i do. notice how the top left and bottom right parts don't move forward like the others that's the problem.  please help.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

I would be more than happy to help you with this issue.  Would you be willing to zip up and attach a simple Max file for me to look at so I can better understand this?  I'll make a video explaining what is happening and get you sorted out.  Thank you very much for doing so!

I'll send it as soon as I can. Currently I am unable to, as my computer is at school, and I can't head there until Wednesday. Thanks for the help.

Hello @Anonymous,

No problem, happy to help.  Just hard to diagnose based on that image without knowing the underlying topology.  Thanks for the update!

Thank you for attaching that @Anonymous,

So what is happening here is that on a base level, all polygons are made up of triangles.  It's nice because a triangle is always planar.  What you are seeing there is the triangles that make up your 4 sided faces.  (2 triangles in each 4 sided face.) Under the hood, you have the ability to edit which way those triangles cut a face, this is called triangulation and it can be enabled when you have faces selected and you use the "Edit Triangulation" button.  Those triangles then show up as dotted lines so you know how they are cutting your 4 sided face.  I have a screenshot below.  So what you are seeing is the polygon triangles under the hood.  This is why this is happening to your model, and it's totally normal.  I have reattached your file with different triangulation so that vertex you have way in there doesn't look so odd.  It takes some getting used to, but here is a link for more information.
