QtWebEngineProcess.exe RAM hog 97% usage of 32GB

So, i just finished up watching an Amazon Prime movie, FYI this is like... the 6th movie i've watched through Chrome, however...

This is the FIRST one i've watched since installing 3DS Max 2020... it was Star Trek: First Contact... don't judge.

just as Picard is saying his goodbye to Lily, to beam back to the Enterprise-E i noticed a stutter, at first i didn't think much about it, my internet isn't the greatest so i figured buffering lag.

Credits roll, and i go to minimize and then close the movie, when i notice the cursor stuttering too... ok, thats system side... oh boy whats going on...

Bringing up task manager which i keep running in the background and notice RAM has been pegged for a while and i notice HDD starting to peg too... wtf??

go to "Processes" to then sort by "Memory" and find a program called "QtWebEngineProcess.exe" is hogging all the RAM for some odd reason... i wasn't doing anything other than watching an Amazon Prime video...

ok, this thing looks new to me so i do some sleuthing first before i *end task* it, cuz once it goes poof i'll never find it on my own.

Right Click - Open Folder Location: "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2020" wait what? i haven't even booted that program since last night!

seeing 27 files all starting with "Qt" its clearly not some kind of coincidence, its part of the program... ok, google search to the rescue?

first dozen or so results about "QtWebEngineProcess.exe" say its a malware, and used by more than one program, like Origin by EA for example...

I'm more than certain, 3DS Max 2020 isn't malware... though it does seem like it has malicious tendencies towards ones sanity when modeling... but that's more operator error and general program instability imo.

so...

why the hell is it running without any other 3DS Max program running? and why is it consuming all that RAM???

Same problem here!

For me this happens sometimes when Corona Interactive Renderer is running and I make a change to the scene that requires Corona to reload stuff.

3dsmax then becomes so unrepsonisve that it is very difficult or impossible to stop the interactive renderer and it must be killed through task manager.

Hi @Anonymous

3ds Max uses the Qt framework for the majority if it's UI, so it is perfectly normal to find *Qt* files in the 3ds Max installation directory. What is a confusing is that you found a process running traceable back to 3ds Max, without 3ds Max itself running. I will ask the devs about this to see if they can lend some insight..

So it's 3ds max ruining my work completely hanging my entire PC. Well, i'm not surprized. Your software can be used as a perfect tool to torture people. Now you suffer without even running it.

Nonsense.

First of all, QtWebEngine is for integrating web content inside the QT environment. So my first suspicion is that it is used by the 3dsmax Welcome Screen. So i checked this by using ProcessExplorer, and indeed the QtWebEngineProcess is started by showing the WelcomeScreen. CPU usage is minimal <1%.Closing the WelcomeScreen closes the process. If 3dsmax is not running the Process won`t start of course.

So perhaps i would try to deactivate the WelcomeScreen by editing 3dsmax.ini or just unchecking the option in the WelcomeScreen itself, just to be sure.

If after a reboot the process is still running, it might be used by a different application and not 3dsmax.

To this I must reply "nonsense" too. I have system with 128gb ram and this QtWebEngineProcess takes up to 100gb. It happens randomly, overnight, when the computer is idle (empty max instance) or running (crashes the render as the system runs out of memory). It has nothing to do with welcome screen as that is something I switch off right after installation. Anyone found solution to this?

Hmm, then i apologize about the 'nonsense' ,but these are the observations on my side.

  • First it would be interesting what 3dsmax version you are using.
  • So the process starts with 3dsmax and closes with it?
  • Then, can you perhaps check with Task Manager or  Sysinternals ProcessExplorer the QtWebEngineProcess if the Memory leak occours?
  • Did you try to kill the process using Task Manager? Does RAM usage go back to normal?

Here you can see on my system the process attached to 3dsmax:

3dsmax.PNG

this is after closing the Welcome Screen:

3dsmax_2.PNG

Perhaps you can check if the process is also attached to other applications. You can of course skip this part, if the process closes with 3dsmax You can also try to Kill the process. And we can probably include @brentscannell again in the conversation with more info from your side. Maybe @Anonymous  found a solution.

Best regards,

Meli

As i am in classes to learn 3D Animation via 3DS Max at the local Junior College, i cannot risk these hindrances of a beta released software.  Rather, i use the software at the campus labs and if there's an issue there, at least i have my instructor to attempt a fix for me...

So far, several issues that are carry over bugs that Autodesk seems to think we like as features are solved by "save and restart the program"  this solution has been around since... version 2008 i think my instructor said.

However, i occasionally have an issue where my viewport decides not to render anything i'm working on, like suddenly it has forgotten how to render on the Nvidia RTX Quadro 5000 in the machine, which in my opinion is overkill since Autodesk decided to lose MentalRay and iRay (could have taken that one on yourselves but figured Arnold was the same eh?)

So far, my solution has been not to use the updated software as the classroom has the first iteration of 2020.  Even though the desktop app keeps alerting me of a few updates to install, which completely goes against my every fiber of existence to ignore.

also, my popup startup thing is disabled too, still happens.

not sure if i shared system specs, but here you go:
AMD Ryzen 5 1500X @3.8Ghz(OC)

Corsair LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-2666

EVGA GTX 1070 Ti

1TB FireCuda

2TB BaraCuda

ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F GAMING

EVGA 850W PSU (don't remember name etc)

Attached DxDiag.txt in case you wanted to view it, though i've only ever had an issue with 3DS, i noticed some errors in the report with two games that i never actually noticed while playing them.

Ok, i think i have to apologize again:

After further investigation of the issue, it indeed seems that after a specific time or event this process (QtWebEngineProcess.exe) kicks in and utilizes/~40MB RAM varies (+/- 10MB). Even with Welcome Screen disabled. I see no principle reason for why this is happening. It seems not tied to a specific feature or function. Here it kicks in when simply using the Main Menu.

Why it`s leaking RAM until crash on your system or hogs the CPU with 97% , i don`t know. It`s definitely not happening on my system here. I would have noticed that.

qt_Usage.PNG

Command line:

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2020\QtWebEngineProcess.exe" --type=renderer --disable-gpu-memory-buffer-video-frames --enable-threaded-compositing --disable-mojo-local-storage --no-sandbox --use-gl=desktop --enable-features=AllowContentInitiatedDataUrlNavigations --disable-features=SurfaceSynchronization,TouchpadAndWheelScrollLatching --service-pipe-token=53C04BDD7E7DE82E04AB537E9BE3A642 --lang=de --device-scale-factor=1.5 --num-raster-threads=4 --enable-main-frame-before-activation --service-request-channel-token=53C04BDD7E7DE82E04AB537E9BE3A642 --renderer-client-id=3 --mojo-platform-channel-handle=10420 /prefetch:1

Since i don`t work for Autodesk, i don`t have any info if this is a known issue or if it had already been reported by multiple users. Perhaps @hagen.deloss have some insight or can ask the team what`s going on here.

This is on 2020.2 release.

I never said anything about CPU usage, just RAM usage, as stated in the title.

Lets try not fabricating issues here, i only need the attention on RAM usage, no need to send devs on a wild goose chase.  Keep. On. Topic. Please.

Hmm, yeah sorry about that.

I`m not sending anyone anywhere, since i`m not working for Autodesk and i can`t replicate this issue on my system.

All i can say it that this process seems to kick in for no apparent reason. I found this simply interesting.

Good luck.

At the Classroom currently, here are the specs for the systems we get to learn on:

Classroom Spec01.PNGClassroom Spec02.PNG

and there is no problem, the process never starts up to begin with.

StudentEditionNOQT.PNG

Attached is the DxDiag.txt from the machine.

Autodesk didn't reply on the question. I have the same problem. This process takes about 50% of all my RAM memory.

Thread Necro

So, was this ever solved? I have the exact same problem which has been bugging me for a few weeks so I started to look around and see if I was alone

I never notice the problem during the day but my pc in the morning may have either

1. A windows crash box telling me the qtwebengine has stopped working

2. A qtwebengine process running that is hogging all my ram (without max still running)

3. A crashed 3dsmax and various other crashed programs, the windows display performance having been downgraded a few notches - I presume this all because it is out of memory

4. None of the above and everything is fine (or nothing that I noticed)

As the qtwebengine process on my machine in several locations, all of them autodesk products I'm guessing some kind of clash somewhere?

If there was ever a fix and somebody would care to share it would be much appreciated

I have this issue as well and it's infuriating. Why does sorting this out fall on the shoulders of PAYING CUSTOMERS. Where is Autodesk? What am I paying for exactly? old code?

Message 16 of 31

I've actually now encountered it on another machine, but only once so its definitely not a frequent problem for me . The previous setup was win7 [32gb] and the new occurrence is win 10 [64gb]. Now that I know what the process is I am seemingly able to close it without any problem, but renaming the file so that it can't run at all just stops Max launching

All I can suggest is keep an eye out for the process and kill it if you see it running

To me, it looks like its a process that is supposed to kick in at launch, like a licence verification, and although it should quietly go away sometimes it just keeps running and leaking memory. Hopefully somebody who knows more will be able to shed light on this

Any chance we could get some solution to this? We already lost or valuable work to this bug many times. It would be great to hear some statement from Autodesk.

Hi everyone,

I'm following up with the developers on this, but wanted to note that 3ds Max 2021 seems to have addressed issues where the QtWebEngine.exe process wasn't being closed cleanly when 3ds Max was shut down. (I'm not positive this is connected, but I'm double-checking this.)

Can you confirm if you're still seeing these Qt issues with 3ds Max 2021 specifically? Thanks!

Hello,

I just wanted to follow up on this thread again to see if other people were still experiencing this Qt resources issue, or if upgrading to 3ds Max 2021 has fixed this for you.

Please let us know, and we hope to hear from you soon!

this problem still exists in 3ds max 2020, today I ran into this problem myself, the file used 90-95% of my RAM, P.s I don't know English well enough and I write via google translate: p
