PFlow for mosaic effects

There is a great plugin for AE called 'Pastiche' that creates mosaics, even animated

Is something like this possible with PFlow in Max?

I assume you need camera facing particles.

How would the particles take the form of a shape/mesh?

Like you said, you would use a combination of 'Position Object' with 'Shape Facing'.

  • Position Object allows you to place particles on objects or subobject-selections.As an alternative you can use Birth Texture to place particles with the help of a texture on an object.
  • A 'Spin' operator  gives you random rotation, but you will have to enable 'Allow Spinning' in Shape Facing operator for this to work.
  • Material Dynamic does the random distribution of materials/maps for the particles. It might also work with RandomizedBitmaps OSL shader, but i didn`t try.

I attached a scene file in 2017 format.

Also you can do interesting effects using DataChannel modifier and the RandomizedBitmap OSL shader.
